I'm working on a short story with a self-imposed deadline of August 31. If I don't finish by that date I have to go a full day eating only bananas. My story is based on a dream in which a strange otter-like beast leapt out of a swimming pool and consumed someone peering into the water. For some reason this led to a story that takes place in Hollywood during the silent movie era, so I've been researching that amazing but largely forgotten period of American cultural history. Writing fiction takes me to surprising places.
I'm finishing up a project started for Nanowrimo 2010. Hopefully, it will be back from the editor and Beta readers in time for a Labor Day release!
I am trying wrap my head around the concepts of faith, hope and love after a series of tragedies rocked my family. I hope I can do it in a way that will encourage people's own understanding while not sounding like a "welcome to my therapy session" project. Check out the progress in months to come at www.theseremain.com.
I hope the project for the 8 and 11 year old girls out there is going well, Jacci. I have to admit, I'm completely at a loss on how to engage that group. But I have two little boys (1 and 4), plus I was never a little girl... well, not unless you ask my older brother.I would love to write something for 12 to 15 year old boys, but since they don't read it is a losing proposition. I have to start making more money first. Then maybe I can swing back. For now I'm trying my hand at paranoid thrillers aimed at a large swatch of readers. Commercial. But at least I'll have explosions and telekinesis fueled, hybrid monster warriors. So that's something.
Maybe I'll pick your brain when I get my main two characters formulated better. I'm going with a single father protagonist with a 14 (ish) year-old daughter. I've been contemplating making her a really mature, well-behaved young woman with a rare form of cancer reducing her life expectancy to her twenties. But I want to focus a lot of the emotional arc of the story on the relationship between her and her father (working to find a cure as a paleobotonist while trying to still be a doting father).i Anywho...

Dang, that's heavy stuff Mark. No shying away from the hard stuff for you!

Ha! Don't forget most of the book is about stuff blowing up. The emotion is just to keep the book real (as real as I can stand to get anyway).
