Kobo have now opened up their publishing portal to indies, and very impressive it is too!

Basically, it doesn't so much kick KDP's behind as greet it with a full-on Glasgow kiss!

The UI is slick and easy to navigate and there is a nice dashboard when you sign in.

J.S - just checked my own effort and see that it is listed on the Kobo site - not sure where they got the price from, but who cares. I've had Kobo sales via Smashwords, so not sure if Kobo are reselling (from Smashwords) or selling in their own right.

I looked at the Kobo several months ago in an airport somewhere. They're a Canadian company so I thought seriously about buying one.

No idea what devices are available now but I really disliked the one I looked at. The 'quilted' back was just wrong.

Does anyone have any personal experience of the device?

When I was in London there I was looking at them in airport too. I was so tempted to get one but logically I probably won't use it much.

I have enough books on my Kindle to last me for a long time, plus our library doesn't have that many titles to warrant a separate device for it. I'll just use my iPad that I'm gonna get. (If I can wait long enough that is)

I agree about the 'duvet' back. I think the key thing is that you can get them for under 50 quid in Asda - that breaks a key psychological price barrier.

I had wondered about getting one when I saw they were around £50. I probably wouldn't buy many books for it though as it is easy and convenient to buy from Amazon, so the only real use would be for borrowing library books, as kindle versions aren't available yet. BUT at the moment the choice of books from the library is not all that good (at least of the books that I would want to borrow) I have the PC for Kobo version & that will do for now.

It's good that Kobo is user-friendly from a publisher's point of view, but I've never liked the look of them as a reader, so I'll stick to letting Smashwords worry about that market :)

The Kobo came on my tablet so I did have a look but up to now I have not found anything cheeper than Amazon & I don't think that the site is as easy to navigate. I will keep my eye on their prices but as I love my kindle so much a book would have to be a LOT cheeper for me to buy from them.
I am pleased there are now indies, maybe that is what they were missing, as I love so many indie authors I will now go back & look again, you never know what could be there waiting to be discovered!

My dad has a Kobo and I really like the feel of it in my hand.
I've also uploaded my books onto Kobo and would love to download a copy to check the formatting - however I dont think my dad would cope with having historical romance on his device. LOL!

Sorry, what I meant to say (sigh) was has anyone had formatting corruption issues?
I used a word document (as per Kobo's instructions) but I know awful things can happen to word document on KDP so I was curious to know if anyone had experience of Kobo in this respect.

Right I've had a play with this Kobo thingy. One of my books is on there now:

There is an option to preview but (here's the twist) you need to install the Kobo app before you can do this. There are options to install it on PC, Tablet, Phone etc.

Once it's installed then you need to login, so of course you need an account but that's the same for kindle etc.

From there the preview option works great and the only quibble I had with formatting was that my chapter links at the front were a little untidy but not horrid.

It looks sharper and tidier than Kindle in my opinion and overall I'm impressed and my other books will be on Kobo shortly.

I've just seen this. Thanks J.S. As regards sales, not one. Sales are very low everywhere anyway. I guess that may change with the release of book two.

The user interface is very slick and easy to use, more so than KDP.
