I've always found the Secret Garden a lot more interesting than A Little Princess, simply because Mary's such a flawed character, and yet, eventually, so empowering, but without the proselytizing that accompanies way too many of Hodgson Burnett's books. I can't wait to see what you think of it, and the others!

Sure! I should be finished both by Saturday. Since I've already read it, I don't want to hold you back if you get excited and want to read further! We can just start at the same time and make status updates as we go along. That way we can discuss. When we finish (and you will probably finish before me because I have my lovelies, Thing 1 and Thing 2, to distract me, lol) we can have an even better discussion on our reviews. We can compare and contrast things we liked and didn't like. Does that sound good to you and Archer?

Believe it or not, I haven't watched the Gone With The Wind movie either. But I'm a huge fan of the book and the official sequel, Scarlett (which isn't written by Margaret Mitchell, btw). And honestly, there's not much to like about Scarlett. At least, not initially. She's vain, spoilt and such a bitch. And the whole epiphany thing only strikes her at the end of the first book. She's so blatantly flawed yet there's something so incredibly alluring about her, so grudgingly admirable about that motto she lives by - 'tomorrow is another day' - I think she's the best fleshed out character in literary fiction.

Also, I think that histrionic personality had something to do with it.

Um, I believe that Alice and Lizzy have some thing in common: they are both rather strong headed.

Well it probably goes without saying that I am totally for you querying those Australian agents! I have a pretty strong opinion that I like seeing Aussie authors mantaining a sort of Aussie flavour to their work - not saying that everyone should start writing about cattle farming in the outback... but...

Lara Morgan with her Rosie Black Chronicles for instance, I'm very impressed that she's writing for an international SF audience, but her world-buidling is based on Perth in 100 years time... and the little things... such as the diets becoming very Asian influenced because of where Perth sits in terms of migratory routes, is wonderful.

It makes me sad when I see Aussie authors writing intentionally for certain overseas market or riding the coat tails of a certain trend and making their books have that same homogeneity that makes those books popular. Not going to name anyone, but the comments on their books tell all!

Have a good think Lissa. I wouldn't worry too much about the writing, as long as your roots are true;-)

Now that I think about it, the answer appears to be yes! Lots of authors voices come to mind, esp in contempt Aussie YA, which is just beautiful in its simplicity. I think it's part of the charm for overseas readers too.

And Lissa, if that is your natural voice, then use it. I haven't heard it, do you want me to?

All I know is that if you try and talk in a funny-funny fancy voice then writing will become a painful experience, the joy will go, you will no longer want to do it and then life will no longer be worth living*
