Where to start with this one, the actually story Another great Batman elseworld / black label story. Man I really wish DC would expand this label to basically every hero and villain as it seems Black Label produced some of the best stories honestly.

Where to start with this one, the actually story is a another “realistic” take on The Batman, but somehow despite all the different realistic takes we’ve gotten on Bats, this still feels unique and fresh in a way. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, it’s feel like a spin we haven’t necessarily seen before. Things such as Alfred leaving Bruce at a young age because he couldn’t handle all the anger and pain of this young boy, because as he puts it, he’s just a damn butler. Or that this bats did have a relationship with a Captain Gordon, but it quickly backfired and got a bunch of criminals released (due to it being through vigilanteism) and that destroyed Gordon’s career and had him fired from the GCPD and chased out of Gotham early in Batman’s career, which is another thing different about this book, it takes place in year 3 of Batman’s career. We see an imposter has framed bats for the murder of criminals and Batman now has to race against the clock of the ever looming GCPD and Media to catch this imposter before it goes so far that everything is ruined.
What I like most is that we get to see into this version of Bruce’s psyche through meetings with Leslie Tompkins every morning at dawn (bc she has threatened to call the cops if he doesn’t show up) and really get a look at how he ticks, it feels very much in line with the new Robert Pattinson Batman, esp the art style and look of Bruce.
I also enjoyed the relationship that develops between Bruce/Bats and the new detective, Choi. They share a bond through past trauma as they both witnessed their parents gunned down at a young age and both vowed to serve justice so that never happens again to another child. But in the end, despite catching the imposter who was a homicide cop named Hatcher, her partner, Batman broke that newly forming relationship. A relationship that feels like a combo of Catwoman and Gordon put into one person.
Another thing I enjoyed was seeing more minor Batman villains shine, like Rat catcher and Ventriloquist, even the Wesker family being some of the top 1% of Gotham, it’s refreshing.
Overall I really loved the book, my only complaint is that at times the artwork can be a bit hectic to follow, mainly during action panels, but the story it’s self was great. ...more "
