This is a fantastic series. Torin is so cool and such a great heroine- the fact that she’s always so level headed and in control but also has real emotions and doubts makes the story even more exciting to read. I also love that this is written in 3rd person omniscience it add whole new layers getting to see multiple sides to a story. 9.5/10

I’ve been reading too much romantasy lately because I’m reading into things TOO MUCH! Tanya Huff has such a unique writing style that’s somehow very modern but also classic. I love this book so much (I hope the next one’s available at the library).

Maybe I just feel like I’m following this one better because I’ve read a whole book set in this universe but I think it’s really built something captivating now. I love that Torin is so good at her job but it’s admittedly frustrating that she’s a high stakes baby sitter. Definitely one of my new favorite heroines of all time.

Ugh, men. That’s really all I have to say. And I guess ugh, entitlement too. Maybe I’m just frustrated by real people but this book is hitting the nail on the head when it comes to social interaction in the workplace. Torin’s self control deserves a medal- I’m honestly shocked she hasn’t shot anyone yet.

That ending was just… WOW!! Book one was a roller coaster and Tanya Huff doesn’t pull her punches. I absolutely adore her writing style and can’t wait to see what happens next. That being said, I’m a little said Torin isn’t with her team in the second book. Things could change but I’m a little worried that this series is just going to be “put Torin in situations” and not an over arching story.

Any trepidation I had about this book is officially gone. I’m 100 and 10 percent invested. The world Tanya Huff has created is just right. Very real while still being completely alien. I love that she builds as she goes instead of info-dumping. It makes the pace really good while still keeping her audience informed.

Now we’re getting somewhere. I will admit I’m still getting confused about which aliens are which and I don’t know most of the characters’ names but I’m getting there. And the story has my full attention now so that will help.

I’m having a hard time keeping some of the alien races straight. I wish there were pictures but the more I read the more the information is clicking so maybe I just need a good uninterrupted hour of reading instead of bits and pieces when I have time.

I love how Tanya Huff just throws you in. Her world building is always inspired. I am struggling a bit with some of the military terms and species names- I’m not that far along in the book though so I’m sure some of that will clear up as I read more.
