rereading this because the sequel is finally out except my memory of the events of this first book are quite fuzzy.

this is, in fact, hurting like hell, and I have a feeling it's only going to get worse from here. also, someone make sure studio bones keeps their grimy little hands away from this light novel - they'll never be able to do it justice. (I say that as if they've ever done bsd justice, but hopefully you know what I mean.)

seeing chronic illness (specifically pots) representation in a historical fiction novel is something we desperately need to see more of.

technically I am reading these out of order but that's because I'm reading them chronologically rather than in publication order.

I can already tell this is going to be one of my favourite books of the year.

I‘ve got a really bad feeling about how this is going to end. I’m so anxious my stomach hurts.

this is taking me an embarrassingly long time to finish but it's not my fault I'm too deep in the anime/manga trenches to pick up an actual book (and this isn't exactly the easiest book to read in terms of the subject matter).

oh I'm so not ready for this.

am I the only one whose editions of the entire trilogy are different shades of white? as in, each book is a different shade of white, with this one being the brightest? this is ABSURD.

since i'm taking a break from the poppy war for a few days, i decided to get onto my reread of this before the show comes out!

going to need to take a break from this for at least a few days because chapter 21 is by far the most brutal and gruesome depiction of g*nocide i've ever read in my life. and to think that it was inspired by real accounts of the nanjing m*ssacre... and to think about how this entire book has reminded me of the countless g*nocides unfolding in real time... i can only take so much.
