In the first part, Paiva reflects on his childhood. In doing so, we get snapshots of who his mother, Eunice, was throughout her life as a lawyer who fought against the dictatorship and into an old lady with Alzheimer’s. The description of the setting and of Paiva’s upbringing is so uniquely Brazilian, as is the inclusion of details around the dictatorship and how it affected him as a youth who grew up under it
