Chapter 9’s meditation on whether it’s possible to truly know someone else was a fascinating read, with a beautiful conclusion of sorts that is conveyed through Lily’s character

Robin is facing increasing tension between the comfort that comes from benefiting from colonialism, and the guilt that comes knowing that this comfort comes at a cost to the less fortunate

really impressed by this so far, making a fantasy novel out of the concept of translation is so unique but there’s so much to explore

already there are seeds being planted in critiquing how translation reinforces colonial power and sanitizes foreign works, can’t wait to see where the story goes from here

The prose on this is so beautiful, it’s such a slow read but really addictive nonetheless

Marcelo juxtaposes his idyllic stay at a family friend’s house with his mother’s capture and torture at the hands of the Brazilian military police at the same time, making it that much more brutal of a read

In the first part, Paiva reflects on his childhood. In doing so, we get snapshots of who his mother, Eunice, was throughout her life as a lawyer who fought against the dictatorship and into an old lady with Alzheimer’s. The description of the setting and of Paiva’s upbringing is so uniquely Brazilian, as is the inclusion of details around the dictatorship and how it affected him as a youth who grew up under it

Fun, imaginative, and full of whimsy. An ode to childhood, to those who still think in pictures instead of numbers. Loving it so far

If it wasn’t clear before, this story solidifies phoenix as easily the strongest of the xmen at this point

idk how he writes action this vividly but the last chapter felt like I was watching an anime fight scene

the way the politics of this book are handled is so cool and engaging
