Very profound and thought-provoking, providing resources of hope for those who are cognitively impaired for whatever reason (birth, injury, trauma). Sometimes a bit abstruse or long-winded (which even leads to incoherence or a chain of implied false dichotomies that doesn’t really work argumentatively) but reachable by the charitable reader!

Fascinating and paradigm-shaking… but quite frustrating in places, as paragraphs don’t quite manage to demonstrate some of the tempting (or merely emotive — “certainly the middle classes of non-metropolitan Britain experienced savage change to their lifestyle with the rise of evangelical culture”, p.40, which is silly and not actually borne out by the rest of the section) headline claims CG makes.

Again, amid the quite shocking accounts of the incompetence and racist assumptions of the German police as they investigated these terrible murders, we find confusing statistics supposedly there to make the reader feel that Germans’ opinions about immigrants are wrong… but which actually bear out the opinions… (insofar as such opinions are worth taking seriously)

The book is a bit all over place, structure a bit unclear, too many names, and some corny writing at the level of the sentence. However, when JK begins to introduce the victims there is no doubt about the power of the story, the dreadful repercussions for the families, and the appalling incompetence of the German police, with their fixation on the theory that the crimes were committed by immigrant mafia.

I hadn’t realised just how many neo-Nazis there are in Germany. Horrific. The ones we have here in the UK are complete amateurs by comparison, thankfully. // But while we have a whole book about the descent of three young people into racist murder (serial murder, possibly twenty victims?), within a few paragraphs we pass by the racist murders of thousands of Kurds and Alevis by their fellow Turks. Free pass?
