Wow with the computer programmer story

I keep trying to remember how this ended, but I don’t remember any of this, not even foggily. Admittedly getting impatient with the Radch social distinctions at this point in the story but between Breck trying to cover her identity and her Rip Van Winkle thousand year old companion it makes sense it’s an issue. 28 hours left for this loan + I’m determined to finish before so I can finally go on to book 2

Really not enjoying the voice or writing in general on this one, but still really want to read. May just try tiny chunks at a time and force my way through. Maybe at some point I’ll get pulled into it more

I remembered the beginning up to just before the coming of Stragan I think but as I’m listening some of it is coming back including flickers of the end game

I read the ebook the 1st time - wow this feels like a giant switch, but narrator’s voice starts very well

Started listening prepared to stop it if it was the usual lite fic, but was sucked in immediately, just like her storytelling on The Moth

I really love this book, but there have been a few points where it felt very like a pilgrimage story which bugged me. It does make me more curious about Dante’s Inferno, but also makes me wonder about Pilgrim’s Progress (which I actively do not want to read at this point/era in time). You can see both the metaphor of the journey to their souls’ travels, and the reality of the journey in burning off soul chaff

The judgement that is wound through this book is truly disturbing. It’s an excess of that kind of glee at demonizing “the other side”, including directed misogyny toward individuals whose character the MC doesn’t approve. I’m sympathetic to the opinion, but I don’t appreciate body shaming nor the pretense that insulting a nasty person for their body doesn’t impinge on better ppl w/similar forms

Beautiful finish
Actually made me think of Blood Over Bright Haven, a woman RETURNING to the position of power (tho thought to be the 1st), thru destruction opening the way for healing and restoration/renewal. Perhaps reminiscent of the goddess Kali’s powers of destruction and birth
