Melanie was about to be wheeled to the lab for what ever in the mind of Dr Caldwell. Quite early on, you would already have guessed this was a zombie apocalypse and the children were somehow not turned entirely into mindless hungries (as zombies were called in the story) but processed human emotions, intelligent, except they did't have to eat or drink and turned crazy when they smell human flash.
