"It is easy to let go of the string and think: This isn't me, it's the arrow. My hands do not bear the blood of this boy, it's the arrow that killed him, not me. But the arrow does not dream at night. I wish for you to not dream either, little blue-eyed dryad. Farewell, Braenn."

This was awesome. But I just discovered the author is an ignorant hypocrite (Metro 2033 author called him "an arrogant motherf*cker*"), that last chapter felt very OOC, and I don't think I like Yennefer. :/ In hindsight, I don't think Sapkowski knows how to write women whatsoever.

(1) Wonder if my female students are too old for this now. (2) Peter David did 4 tales here; a drama and 3 comical fluffs. (3) John Blair Moore's take on kid!Belle was oddly critical. (4) Bizarre that famous lyrics were rewritten; I've never heard of a kid's publisher named Joe's Books.

The clunkiest parts of the book isn't the prose, multiple character POVs, the time jumps, or even the Earth vs Trisolaris interludes -- it's all of them together in a way that just doesn't flow.

Arguing with self-aware MMO characters against your own execution when there's permadeath was a cute moment.

Upgrading this from House of the Dead to Resident Evil levels of bad. So much of the plot and characterizations remind me of Japanese video games. World humanitarian bankrolls Islamic terrorists for money and a hot scientist girl! Gary Stu hero is reluctant hero who leads team! mysterious leader w/ one distinguishing quirk: sweets! Typical.

Pure junk food. The apex of shit creek is still shit. Author is some wannabe badass who seems to have spent his life writing about the gates of hell, but never actually bother to look up the address.

A friend who's a photography nut pointed out a factual error: there was no Leica M2 in 1988. M2 came out in 1957. 1988 brought us the anniversary edition of the M6. This wouldn't be such a big deal if the author didn't make such a fuss about the model of the camera in the story itself.

A daughter watches her mother and a mob of classmates murder her father in a socially sanctioned tableau, then discover a close friend had committed suicide at home. Well, that was dark. But there is nothing romantic about revolution.

Even when someone's full of complete bullshit, it's important to try to see them as they see themselves. And to know who their heroes are, and what they find worth worshipping.

Damn book has gone way too long, but managed to grow on me. I haven't read anything of Doctorow's that's felt *real* since his "Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town". I can't explain this book. Except I think I understand there's beauty to be found in human pettiness.

An unstable market is a functional market. "[Y]ou invent something and charge all the market will bear for it. Someone else figures how to do it cheaper, or decides they can do it for a slimmer margin-- not the same thing, you know, in the first case someone is more efficient and in the second case they're just less greedy or less ambitious." Undercutting then drives down prices and creates 'superabundance'.

Easy to forget this is the same world as the Swagger novels. But there it is: "Sergeant Swagger returned to the car to await medical attention but bled to death before help could arrive.
He leaves a wife, Erla June, and a 9-year-old son, Bob Lee.”

"Richard knew he was smart . . . “But Lamar was *smart*. Put Richard on the street and he’s dead. Put Richard in jail and he’s dead. Put him in Russia, in ancient Rome, on Mars, in the Marine Corps, all those places—he’s dead. Not Lamar. Lamar ends up running most of them, or in their prisons, running them. Lamar just knows.”
