Glad I read one of her later novellas first — the writing in this one has more “training wheels” than I usually endure; but I went into it with a loose idea of characters, conflicts, and “big picture” ideas of the magic system. It allowed me to stick it out through sections that ordinarily would have made me DNF the book. I still have the last 30% to go, but I now see the added layers and I’m sold.
