Well, I was looking for a broad survey of African history, its peoples, kingdoms, and civilizations, since that’s not something you get in US schools, and so far that’s what she’s delivering. I also didn’t want to read a dry textbook, so her personal touch is nice. On the other hand, if you’re looking for depth or a bold thesis, you won’t find it here. Because she focuses on ancient African history up to the pre-colonial period, it might be a nice companion to the other book you mention, which seems to be on contemporary Africa with some colonial context thrown in. Definitely lite history but that’s okay for me. It’s had some interesting anecdotes and filled in plenty of gaps in my very basic knowledge.
