I really love this book, but there have been a few points where it felt very like a pilgrimage story which bugged me. It does make me more curious about Dante’s Inferno, but also makes me wonder about Pilgrim’s Progress (which I actively do not want to read at this point/era in time). You can see both the metaphor of the journey to their souls’ travels, and the reality of the journey in burning off soul chaff

In Starbucks sipping my mocha frappuccino + just startd reading abt the witch Erichtho when suddenly gigantic gasp of horror as I realize the pkg sending for which I was rewarding myself was incomplete + this very important thing was still sitting in my bag instd of in said pkg 🤦‍♀️. Was thankfully able to race over + add said missing thing in before pkg left, but may have lost the thread on witch Erichtho

Down to the depths of despair then rising to glee
From the weaver girl lost to her bridge of birds to the pirate boatman of hell
From the hell that is the question of trust after so often betrayed to swashbuckling rescue across the river Lethe

Kept meaning to stop and found myself accidentally a page or 2 into the next chapter

And so many things mixed up together

Reached this point during Typhoon Ragasa in Hong Kong while waiting for confirmation of my new China visa 9/24 or 25… and the plain back to Kunming on 9/27
