The novel opens with a plane crash that has stranded a group of boys on a deserted island during wartime. The first two boys introduced are Ralph and Piggy. Exploring the island together, they discover a conch shell, which Piggy suggests can be used to summon the other survivors. When Ralph blows it, the other boys gather. The boys hold a vote and elect Ralph as their leader.
