i have the most absurd theory but it makes so much sense to me 😭 [MAYBE SPOILERS] James knew Ferrars poisoned her husband (which is why he was so adamant to Caroline that she didn't), blackmails her, learns of the letter, murders Ackroyd, makes up the phone call.
