But seriously. Other than a few attempts at his life, what happened? Perhaps this is not supposed to be a mystery… But it’s a little on the nose when the main guy who was vocally against him from the beginning is the one who tries to dethrone him

This is lk a low stakes cozy fantasy about making friends. if I would have known that, I probably wouldn’t have read it, as that is just not my thing

Main problems with this is book: one, I feel the character is so insecure with minimal development. He kind of stays insecure and unsure the entire time and other than realizing it would be bad if somebody else was emperor, he kind of is stagnant in his insecurities

As readers the only thing we’re privy to are people in this court so I currently have no idea what kind of world they’re in, how many elves there are in this world (ie how much power Maia really has) if there’s anything beyond goblins and elves, or the standard of living for people outside of the court. It’s insular and slow but I’m too much of a completionist to not try and finish

This is slow paced to the point of being mostly flat out boring. It’s a political fantasy but like a bureaucratic political fantasy, not a scheming/power-play political fantasy.
The names and positions at court are hard to follow and switch back from 3rd to 2nd person is breaking my sensitive brain
