At least L. M. Montgomery predates that trope, so she wasn't meaning it that way.

Yup! Have you read Kilmeny of the Orchard? It is a lovely L. M. Montgomery story that I finally got around to reading this year.
I haven't read that one but even the name is darling! It's definitely on my list with others by Montgomery like The Story Girl!
