The nearly epithetic device of never using a pronominal referent for a proper noun antecedent is overdone, though, & annoying me. I wasn’t in Botswana long myself but never noticed that as a speech pattern there so find it diminishing/infantilizing. They don’t even shorten 4+ word combos like place names to a simple “the agency” noun phrase. C’mon.

I’m liking the Mmas’ character development via their interaction/dialogue with each other. It seems rich, tender, & detailed, not stiff like most of the rest of the book. I can’t tell if this writer actually got women or not, but maybe yes…!? It’s the men who lack luster, including with women & vice versa so far. It def passes the Beckdale, though! :D

I loved the Jill Scott tv series adaptation but didn’t know then it was written by an old white European. I’m mostly getting the same cozy vibe from this very random copy I found in my block’s lil free library (Why no volumes 1-3 first? Why is it so physically dirty?).
