This has gotten good. Borderline five stars at the moment. Really clarifies things I didn't quite understand in the film.

An odd tale, oddly told, but original. Onward.

This kid has a superpower that I need to develop... Could work against the right targets.

Kenny The book is much more detailed and has greater clarity. If I recall correctly, they only filmed half of the book. This was a five star read for me.

message 2: by Evan (new) - added it

Evan I watched some guy on Youtube talk about the book and he estimated 50-60 percent of the book roughly getting into the film, and jettisoning the mental hospital framing angle of course, but the situations make a lot more sense on the page in literary form. The book got off to an uncertain start for me but I'm digging it now. We shall see. I'm reading the more recent Mitchell translation which tries to simulate some of the quirkiness of Grass' original German expression. But I also have a copy of the earlier English translation on my shelf. I decided to go with the newer one. I might keep the older one and sell the one I'm reading for the sake of shelf space. That was the plan.
