Picked up the ILL library copy yesterday:a beat up 1950 hardcover -`♡´- from the University of Vermont Library; donated to that library by William Hill, Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court.
May 2026 Buddy Read with the dynamic group HORROR OR HEAVEN. I 5-star enjoyed last month's BR, THE CAVES OF STEEL, & so far am enjoying this just as much. Asimov was one (of quite a few) prescient Golden Age SF authors!

I love finding hard copy books, especially if they are in good shape and free :)

Stephanie, If you have any LFLs near you, they are the best source for freee books of all sorts! In addition to LFLs, I shop for books mostly at charity shops and library book sales. Over the past year I've noticed that the visible quantity of hardcover books has more than doubled! Most can be had for a dollar or two but I've had to pass on so many that I would have loved to add to my shelves.....I'm not getting any younger or stronger and so am finding it easier to transport, shuffle, & store paperbacks.Seems the majority of young readers (who unfortunately are a minority!) gravitate more toward 21st century Romantacy (🙄🤮), so would not at all be interested in buying what's available in "pre-loved" hardcover, and what they do read is published only in cheaply constructed paperback. Literally Everything manufactured after 1999 is true trash designed to break, fall apart, malfunction, wear out, implode, combust or in some other way render itself totally useless in a very short period of time! It really makes me wonder...
I know, even the paper printed is cheaper. Thanks for the info, I live in a rural area. Have to head to a city for larger libraries. I love my books and my shelves are groaning with them :) ehhehe That's okay though, I use kindle unlimited because I chew through so many. lol usually 25-40 a month. So if I don't like a book, no harm no foul...
Berengaria wrote: "The Secret Histories of Library Books!"What a great title, Berengaria! You're giving me ideas, but surely someone must have tackled this esoteric subject/theme in the past.
I did a gr title search (including obvious variations)......nada!
A google search yields 'The Secret (Past) Lives of Library Books', a tangentially related 2023 article article posted in the Library of Congress Blog:

Having not found a lot, I feel compelled to seek a deeper dive ⤵︎🕳️.
