Toto fell asleep and the lion is drowsy. The scarecrow and tinman are not affected. They told the lion to run as fast as he can for they can’t drag him. The two make a chair with their arms to hold Dorothy and Toto. They make it to the green grass but the lion fell asleep in the field but not too far frome the grass. They are afraid they will have to leave him behind. They wait for Dorothy to wake up.

Dorothy feels guilty for he is now in an even worse situation than before. The lion tells the tinman to grab his tail after he jumps in. He’s going to swim to shore and pull the raft. It was hard work but he did it! The raft had carried them too far in the wrong direction. They decide to walk along the river bank, back the way they came to get to the yellow brick road. They see where the scaecrow hangs onto the pole.

Ch. 8 They slept well and Dorothy wakes up refreshed. She dines on plums and peaches. The dark forest is behind them and a beautiful country is ahead. They finished the raft. They use a log pole but when they get into the middle of the stream the pole cannot touch the river bottom. Scarecrow pushed so hard on the pole it is stuck in the mud and he is swpt off the raft, hanging on the pole.

It takes too long to build so they camp under the trees by the river. They can see the country on the other side and it is beautiful. I see a lot of connections between this story and Narnia and Middle Earth.

The scarecrow tells the tinman to chop the end of the tree. He does that and the Kalidhasfall into the pit. The tinman’s heart beats quickly from the effort. Each friend put into action the very deficit they are missing. As they walk, the trees are thinner and thinner. They reach some fruit trees growing beside the river. Dorothy has a delicious meal. The scarecrow suggests making a raft and the tinman gets to work.

Kalidahs have a bear’s body with a tiger’s head and they terrify the lion. Then they get to a new ditch which is to wide for the lion to cross. The scarecrow gets the idea to chop down a tall tree to make a bridge. The tinman chops and the lion pushes it down to fall across the bridge. They hear a growl and cross the bridge quickly. Two Kalidahs were crossing the bridge.

Ch. 7 I think I see what he is doing here. The journey is building whatever they are missing so that, when the wizard bestows it on them, they already have it. They make a bed of leaves under a tree. The tinman chops wood and Dorothy builds a fire. She finishes all her bread so the scarecrow stays away from the fire and fills her basket with nuts. The lion goes in hunts his own food which makes the tinman cry.

He knows that, if he growls, he will scare others and they will never know that he is a coward. Everyone puts in their two cents trying to diagnose him. They tell him their problems and their cure (the wizard). He decides to go and ask for courage. They set off again, but Toto disapproves of their new companion. The tinman steeped on a beetle and cried. They had to stop and give him oil. Then they start again.

A lion growled and jumped out. He pawed the scarecrow and knocked him to the ground. He scratched the tinman who fell down. Toto started barking and the lion turned to him until Dorothy bashed the lion in the nose and shamed him. The lion denied everything but then he has a pity party and cries because he knows he’s a coward. He’s supposed to be the King of the Beasts but he’s really a scaredy cat.

Ch. 6 The woods have more dead leaves and branches and the road is worse. The birds have gone and an animal growls from time to time. The tinman has never been to Oz but his father said it is a long road. The tinman is not scared because he has his oil can. The scarecrow can’t be hurt. Dorothy is protected by the good witch’s kiss on her forehead. They just have to take care of Toto.
