Strangely, I feel like I've been reading this book forever, so slowly, and yet I'm enjoying it immensely. There's a really lovely combination of adolescence and post-apocalyptic themes going on, including the typical worries about not being invited to a party, meanwhile all the plants are dying and there's a possible food shortage. That's how life works: we go on even after the apocalypse.

I am at once depressed and awed by this book’s beauty.

Oh god. Somehow it didn't occur to me till very late in this book how sad it was becoming, how little hope there was. I was so focused on Julia's adolescence and the science behind the slowing. But this is a novel about human persistence and ingenuity, love, adolescence, and above all the desire for every person on this earth to leave his or her mark, to write Kilroy was here.

I just keep wondering if any of this will be explained or if, like life, some things will happen and we will/the characters will have to adjust. I know the story takes precedence. I just wonder how this will go. (Also: still beautiful prose, still the kind of wide-eyed wondering I love from a narrator this age.)

The prose is lovely and the story is terrifying. I wasn't expecting such a compelling novel, and I don't know why more friends aren't talking about it.
