This was so good—so good! Stomach lurches, pathos, my favourite tension/conflict. Then, all of a sudden, barely explicably, the conflicting angsty couple were a team, in love, and now their greatest foe: they can’t be together for mostly social class reasons. The focus turns wholly to solving the mystery of the first wife’s murder, which feels predictable. I’m only reading now to see if the obvious villains are so.
