Was it proper, they argued, after a whole century of enlightenment, to keep talking about the atonement in this uncivilised fashion? Could any cultured person endure all this preaching of cleansing of sin through the blood of Christ, when everyone surely knew that the only atonement that could avail before God was the cleansing that consisted in following the holy teaching and example of Jesus in a virtuous life
