The Thief's Countess

Rate this book
A thief turned reluctant protector… A countess who resents but can’t resist him…

THE REIVER

Sir Geoffrey has dedicated his life to exacting revenge on the men who killed his parents and stole his birthright. The son of a baron, he has been reduced to stealing the resources he needs to reclaim his family legacy. Just when he’s on the verge of success, his uncle asks him to put his plans on hold to help protect a wealthy countess. It’s a distraction Geoffrey resents, even more so when he meets Lady Sara. The gorgeous, complicated and alluring lady is everything he’d want in a woman—and everything he can’t have.

THE COUNTESS

With her betrothed coming to claim her hand in marriage and a distant cousin intent on usurping her earldom, Lady Sara Caiser feels beset by controlling, unwanted men. As if that weren’t enough, her father’s deathbed request was for two lawless border reivers to serve as her protectors. Despite her misgivings, an undeniable attraction pulls her into Sir Geoffrey’s arms. The man she thought nothing more than a thief is more dangerous than she believed, for he’s noble, caring and sinfully attractive. As the threats against her continue to mount, Sara must decide what’s more important—her duty or her heart.

Disappointing historical fiction romance. Had all the right pieces but just never fit together. But the Americanized language really sealed the deal. One and done with this series.

PS- and not a patch of heather or kilt in sight— worst offense of all when the Scottish border is the setting.

If you read as many romances as I do- 2.5 stars
If not-3.5 stars

I'm going to start out by saying I think I've been reading way too many historical romances in a row. They tend to bleed together and what is usually just a commonly used trope can morph into an annoyingly unoriginal and cringe-inducing flaw. So I'm well aware that much of what I didn't like about this book was probably my fault, not the author's. But not all of it.

 photo qZ8y8hA_zps4j14n5vf.gif

Lady Sara has just lost her father, the Earl of Kenshire. Now that he is gone, she has a tenuous hold on her lands and a distant cousin is determined to either take her property by force or through marriage. Knowing this, her father ensured she was betrothed before his death and she now waits for him to arrive so that they can be married to secure her position and lands. On his deathbed, the Earl of Kenshire requests that two border reivers, Sir Geoffrey and his uncle, Hugh, stay at Kenshire and protect Lady Sara until she is safely married. Sir Geoffrey is a reiver by necessity, as his birthright was stolen from him and he has family and people that rely on him. Sir Geoffrey lives for one goal, to regain his birthright. When his uncle requests his help to protect Lady Sara, he begrudgingly agrees. Despite falling for each other, they know nothing can come of it as Lady Sara desperately needs the safety gained by the marriage to her betrothed.

If historical romances are not your usual fare and are just something you dip your toe in every once in a while, I would probably recommend this book. It was not badly written. It was pleasant. The hero wasn't an asshole. The heroine was independent and kind. Best of all, there was no weird consent issue. So, in many ways, it was a decent book. If however, you are like me and read a bunch of them, this book would probably get old, fast. The Thief's Countess was basically a huge mishmash of cliches and tropes. This doesn't usually bother me, in fact, they are part of the reason I love romance novels. There is comfort in knowing that the author is pretty much going to select things from a set list of plots, conflicts, and characters but will hopefully add an interesting twist in there somewhere. The problem wasn't the fact that cliches were used, it was the sheer number of them. The heroine was an expert horseman (horsewoman?), was excellent with a bow, sometimes wore pants, stunningly beautiful, incredibly intelligent, and was pretty much perfect all around. The hero was tall, handsome, the best swordsman ever and had no desire to ever be in love. He was an alpha male with a heart of gold. There was the obligatory “why in the hell is she wandering around the halls at midnight in nothing but a shift”. Several, in fact. My eyes nearly rolled into the back of my head every time she decided to shed her clothing in really odd places just so she could be discovered by the hero that way. Our heroine had to almost die so that the hero could finally see his feelings. The H/h both had to have someone interested in them so that there would be jealousy. And to top it all off we have the “I'm not good enough for her.” Just stahp.

Lady Sara and Sir Geoffrey did have fabulous chemistry. There was plenty of angst to go around and up until about the last third of the book, I would have said it was ahhhmazingg. Then it all went to hell. The entire book's conflict and angst are over one huge hurdle. It was what kept me reading. I was completely into it. I kept thinking I can see absolutely no way to overcome this. This is going to be good. Better than good. Brilliant. How will they get out this? Hell, as the end approached, I was on the edge of my damned seat. And when the time came?

You mean the answer to the problem is to ignore the problem and do what you want anyway? Consequences be damned? THEN WHAT WAS IT ALL FOR? Such a strange ending. It was so frustrating because the angst was my favorite part of the book! Don't completely negate it by sweeping it all under the rug! I was seriously confused. Like head- tilting-eyebrow-furling confused.

BUT Despite my harsh rant about this book, the writing itself was fine and considering that my issues were mostly plot-related, I'm still looking forward to the next book. The brother intrigued me. Different book, different brother, different plot. What is it they say? Onwards and upwards!

Medieval setting and it took me 3 attempts to get into the story. The h will lose her family's lands, so the H is sent to protect her while she waits for a much older man to come and rescue her by marrying her. She's unhappy with everything, so after she takes the H as her lover, she decides she will fool her older H into believing she's a virgin. I didn't like her much, or how modern their conversations and characters seemed. Too many tropes for me, just OK.

The Thief's Countess by Cecelia Mecca is an addictive and brilliantly written story of honor, duty and love. Book 1 in what promises to be an extraordinary series, "Border" series. See the prequel, "The Ward's Bride". Set against the Anglo-Saxon border in the 13th century (1271), Northumbria, England. What a great Medevial Romance!

From the first page to the last, I was intrigued and glued to the pages. I couldn’t figure how Sir Geoffrey,
a Reiver, who needs to reclaim his inheritance, who seeks his revenge and Lady Sara Caiser, a Countess, an extraordinary lady of good breeding, alluring and complicated, would find their HEA, with so much against them. However, Ms. Mecca manages to pull it all together in a dramatic and heart felt ending. I loved these two characters, they were so caring, honor bound and determined to make the best out of the hand life dealt them. The secondary characters were perfect, Geoffrey's Uncle Hugh and Sara's lady's maid, Faye, were perfect together, even in secret.

Fast paced with historical details, much research, Medevial challenges and the pressures of Medevial life, brings "The Thief's Countess", to life and adds more intrigue to the story. My only complaint, the ending felt a bit rushed, but was satisfying, as well as, exciting.
Many questions were answered. Filled with danger, suspense, mystery, intrigue, adventure, passion and romance. Everything Medevial Romance fans will love with twists and turns and a few surprises. I feel Cecelia Mecca is a new debut author to watch for, her writing is masterful, talented and an author I intend to follow. Her writing feels as if she's been writing for years. Very impressive indeed! An outstanding Medevial Romance from a very talented author! I can't wait to read Book 2, coming soon! A must read! Bravo, Cecelia Mecca! !
I received a complimentary copy.

I just finished reading The Thief's Countess and was not disappointed. I came across the prequel which was being offered for free at the time so I downloaded and read it. I immediately searched for The Thief's Countess, but it hadn't been released yet. Once it was I scooped it up. I was only able to start reading it a few days ago because, well...life. in any case, I finally read it and was NOT disappointed. This is a sweet love story that has some steamy sex (but not over the top). I'm looking forward to the next one in this series. It's probably a good thing that the complete series hasn't been released yet because I'm sure I'd binge read the whole thing and I have finally exams coming up...

I'm not sure why this book couldn't keep my interest. The book was written well but something kept me lackadaisical. Maybe I have just been reading too many historical romances lately or maybe it was the that the characters were way too typical.

Sara is a countess who just lost her father to an illness. Being a woman in those times, she could not hold her lands by herself so her father had betrothed her to an older but good nobleman who was on his way to marry her. The immediate threat is a distant cousin who wants to claim her lands is on his way to either attack her castle or by other nefarious methods. Her father knew this so he had sent a message to his old friend and his nephew to come and protect his daughter.

Sara was everything you would expect from a female protagonist in a historical romance. She was beautiful, kind, hardworking and caring. Her father had indulged her so she did things that most women of the time wouldn't have dated like wearing pants and shooting a bow and arrow. She was just too perfect for me.

Geoffrey had lost his land and title when a Scottish clan took it over and killed his parents. Ever since, he and his uncle have lived as reivers to survive and they have gathered allies to take his land back. When his uncle received a message to go help out an old friend's daughter, Geoffrey is annoyed because it takes precious time away from his revenge plans but he goes anyway because he's a good nephew.

Geoffrey is the standard alpha male character who is good looking and can wield a sword better than all the other men. He isn't looking for love but is peculiarly attracted to Sara who he knows he can't have.

Don't get me wrong, this book was good. I am just becoming a historical romance snob. Perhaps I will enjoy the second book more.

Awesome Read!

I love this warrior, Sir Geoffrey, who has lost his title, his home, and his parents. Now, with his Uncle Hugh, he must steal cattle, from the Scottish reviers, who stole everything from his family.
Lady Sara, Daughter of the late Earl of Keneshire, has to protect her keep, her people, who rely upon her, from her greedy, dangerous cousin, who is on his way, to steal her home, and her title, Countess. That is why her father, before his death, asked Hugh, and his nephew, Sir Geoffrey, a warrior Knight, to keep her safe, until her marriage to a highly placed Earl.
However, from the moment Sir Geoffrey lays eyes on Lady Sara, his life will change from one of revenge, against the clan, who stole his birth right, to wanting to keep Lady Sara alive, at all cost. Lady Sara, has seen men in her father's keep, practice their art of war, none can compare to this tall, dark, handsome warrior, who has come to protect her life! The only problem is, who is she, in more danger of, her cousin, or Sir Geoffrey?
I highly recommend! Thanks Enjoy!

Publisher's Description:
Will a thief turned reluctant protector… A countess who resents but can’t resist him

My Thoughts:

This is a well written first full length romance debut by Cecelia Mecca.
I read the prequel novella but failed to enjoy it with nearly the intensity of this full length book.
Our heroine is on the verge of an arranged marriage to save herself and her recently deceased father's holdings.

Our hero is a displaced nobleman, turned reiver due to his dire circumstances.
Sara takes an instant dislike to Geoffrey.
Will her feelings change? If she does will it lead to an uncommon love between these heretofore strangers?
Will a thief turned reluctant protector… A countess who resents but can’t resist him come together or grow apart?

In this, the debut full length novel by Cecilia Mecca we find a young countess who has been betrothed by the king to a man who is unknown to her.
This is a well written book situated in medieval Scotland along the borders and is so much more enjoyable than the prequel novella.
Sara is a young countess who strives to do her King's bidding by marrying a man she has never met instead of the man sent to assure her safety. Geoffrey is the man sent to keep her safe and in spite of their almost instant dislike for each other or maybe because it that enmity turns to passion and finally to love.
I enjoyed this book with it's surprising outcome. Ms Mecca has written a surprisingly good story with unforgettable and well developed characters.
I would give this book 4.25 of 5 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5 flames.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this title to read. I have voluntarily left this review.

EXCELLENT

Great story. Well written. For much of the story, I thought of Romeo and Juliet. However, the romance in this story has a happier ending. It also has an exciting/suspenseful betrayal episode. Can not wait to read Bryce's story. Highly recommended. Personal note: I too would like to go back in time and find a knight to love and cherish.

'The Thief's Countess' by Cecelia Mecca is book One in the "Border" series. This is the story of Lady Sara and Sir Geoffrey.
Geoffrey had his birthright stolen and now with his Uncle they have been thieving to get coin to help take care of his younger siblings. Geoffrey is looking to get revenge for what was taken. But his Uncle reports that he had a dying request from a friend that wants them to protect his daughter. That daughter being Sara. Sara is a Countess who Title and Lands are very much wanted by other people. So Sara understands why her father sent the request but she is not happy about it at all. When she meets Geoffrey he is to handsome for his own good. Geoffrey too finds Sara very beautiful and is another reminder of what he has lost with his birthright being taken...that of a Noble Wife.
Ms. Mecca had me sucked into this book from the very first pages. It is one you can't put down!

Sir Geoffrey, a deposed Baron who lost his land and title to thieves, and is fighting to regain it. Lady Sara, a Countess who has lost her father and needs protection while waiting for the Lord her father has betrothed her too in order to keep her lands and all their holdings safe. Geoffrey doesn't want to take the time away from his fight to protect her, and Sara doesn't want a Reiver in her home protecting her, but her father had asked his long time friend and Geoffrey's uncle to do just that. So Geoffrey and Sara are forced to abide the wishes of her deceased father and his uncle, but when they meet the attraction is more than either of them can deny. This is a must read if you love impossible love stories with happy ever after endings. Cecelia Mecca is wonderful writer. Her characters are well rounded and plot is well thought out with beautiful descriptions.

Who would not like a story that contains Love, Treachery, Lust, Dishonesty and it is set in Medieval times. To be honest, I really like Historical Romance but, in this book, Cecelia Mecca has managed to not only combine all of these things (and more), into an involved, detailed and hard to put down story.

I read the prequel, 'The Ward's Bride' and just had to read 'The Thief's Countess'. I was definitely not disappointed.

In entrusting oneself's safety to another person is actually a very brave thing to do. Not only do you have to give up all control to do so, you also have to try and restrain from over-riding their decisions and putting yourself entirely in their hands.

Great book and I really recommend it to all.

Well done Cecelia.

Having read The Ward's Bride, I was interested in seeing how Ms Mecca was going to handle a full novel, and I was not disappointed. The Thief's Countess was an exciting, sensual read that kept my attention all the way. through. I was resentful when my attention was distracted by such mundane things such as laundry and meal preparation! The pull of emotions and electric attraction between Sir Geoffrey and Lady Sara was everything that was forbidden to them, and yet they were unable to pull away from the allure of exploring their illicit relationship. Intermingled with danger and betrayal, this is a very fine example of medieval romance. I highly recommend this book to adult readers. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The Thief’s Countess is filled with mystery, adventure, romance, danger, passion and suspense. You will find yourself wandering how Lady Sara and Sir Geoffrey are going to work out.

Both are strong willed and caring. They come together to find odds that stack up against them.

The author does an excellent job with the characters and the secondary characters are just as good Hugh and Faye are cute together and hope to learn more about them later on.

A wonderful medieval romance to get lost in.

This was the first book in "The Border Series" by new author Cecelia Mecca. But this will not be the last! It drew me in right from the start. Sir Geoffrey and his uncle come to aid Lady Sara from siege in her home that is left without a protector since her father died. There is an attraction between Geoffrey who is naught but a Riever "thief" and Sara. The story is very well written and I could not wait to find out what happened next!! Cannot wait until the second full book in this series comes out!

A true and solid work; she did her research and the book was well edited. She made a formulaic story relatable ~ did not drag the obvious plot about the villain and provided a credible and clever solution to end both lovers' angst. Ms. Mecca is one of the best writers among the new authors of this genre. An author who truly loves her craft, does not insult her readers by inserting present day words/phrases ergo creating a Time Warp (disrupting the flow and throwing~off the reader), her Timeline is spot on. And most importantly, she puts an end to Mediocrity

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the strong characters and thought that they were well matched. Steamy relationship with a good back ground story. The secondary characters were good also. Terrific ending and I'm glad to have received the extended epilogue from the author at the end of the story..It looks like this books leads into the second book. This could stand alone but I like to finish a series.

Sir Geoffrey vows to protect Lady Sara, but she does not make it easy. I enjoyed the fiery interaction between Geoffrey and Sara as well as the plot. Very good story. This was an Advanced Reader Copy. The opinions are my own.

This story follows the historical romance formula and it works. Characters with chemistry and conflict, check. There is a bit of interesting storyline about the loss of border holdings and the thievery that took place for some families to survive. A quick, entertaining read.

I haven't read a historical romance in eons so when I stumbled across this one I was happy to give it a go. I did thoroughly enjoy it, too, for the most part. Well, the first part. There were just some things in the second part I couldn't ignore - because they were big things.

1. The Randolf storyline was totally underplayed. He's the villain and there's a lot of build up about what he's going to do/planning to do and then Bam halfway through the book he's done. I thought there must be someone else much worse and totally unexpected that was going to show up and be the "real" villain. But no. That was it. Randolf was it. Very anti-climactic.

2. The ending was so oversimplified I thought I must have missed something. I mean the build up that I mentioned before was immense and I was wondering what in the world is this heroine going to do - how is she ever going to get out of this and then - well, then - she just up and says nope. Not gonna do it. And in less than 2 and 2 all was well in the land.

I felt like the author just got tired and wanted to end this thing. So she did.

The Thief's Countess

This is the first book of The Border Series by Cecelia Mecca. I recently read book 2 first and then knew I must read the entire series to really know all the characters in the series. Each book can be a stand alone novel. This book deals with the older brother of the Waryn family. Geoffrey has taken to a riever's life to support his two brothers and sister. The family had lost their holding on the border to the Kerr family, a Scotland Clan.As a favor to his Uncle Hugh he is a protector to Lady Sara who is the daughter of a long time friend of Hugh. They fall in love , Sara and Geoffery and spend the entire story trying to convince themselves that her marrying her father's choice for her is best for all concerned.
Read this novel for the experience of a true love that is real and true. Ms. Mecca is a writer that is a must on the list of Medevial
authors. I am ready now to read book 3 and have already purchased it to open to first pages today. Happy Reading.
