Garrick Helmsley, an earl in both England and Scotland, returns from the Crusades to find his Scottish inheritance challenged by his uncle. Forced to secure his claim in Linkirk, he agrees to marry the daughter of a powerful border lord. But no sooner does he agree to the arrangement than he meets Lady Emma Waryn—the impulsive and irresistible sister-in-law of his old friend, the Countess of Kenshire. Before he knows it, he finds himself escorting Lady Emma to Scotland. The more time he spends with her, the more he wishes to end his betrothal, but the situation in Scotland only becomes more heated.
The Lady
Lady Emma loves her elder brothers, but their protectiveness frequently drives her to the brink of madness. The last thing she wants is more of the same in a husband, so she has pledged never to marry a powerful, domineering man. Yet the Earl of Clave is both of those things—and he immediately stirs her passion. Garrick might not be the husband she thought she needed, but she soon realizes he's the only one she wants. Garrick's unwanted betrothal stands between them, but breaking it may well cause a war. Will love find a way to bring the earl and his lady together?

The sequel series set thirty years after the Border Series ends is called Brotherhood of the Border. Meet the children of your Border Series favorites and start with the first book in the series, A Noble Betrayalhere.
Since his father’s death in battle, Garrick Helmsley has been forced to return to England to claim both his earldom of Clave there and the one he has inherited in Scotland. His Scottish holding of Linkirk is threatened by his uncle so Garrick agrees to his mother’s plan for him to marry the daughter of a powerful Scottish border lord. But almost as soon as he agrees, Garrick meets Lady Emma Waryn, the sister-in-law of one of his childhood friends. Garrick finds himself escorting Emma to Scotland and wishing he weren’t betrothed.
Emma loves her family dearly but she’s tired of being smothered by their protectiveness and certainly doesn’t want more of the same in a marriage to a powerful man. But Garrick doesn’t fit with what she expected of a powerful earl, and she soon realizes he’s the man she wants for a husband despite all arguments to the contrary. Garrick risks starting a war if he breaks his betrothal, but for once he may put his own happiness above that of the others around him.
This was such an enjoyable listen and an excellent narration from Tim Campbell. I loved the fact that Emma was unwilling to compromise for anything less than all of Garrick and he never asked her to. It would’ve ruined everything if he’d suggested she become his mistress and I’m so glad that wasn’t the case. I appreciated that both Emma and Garrick were realistic about the obstacles they faced, but they never let that detract from the romance growing between them or from their determination to be together. I really enjoyed the communication between these two as well and I think this wound up being a real comfort read for me even with the contentious setting.
The Earl's Entanglement is book 5 in the Border series by Cecelia Mecca. Although it can be read as a standalone it's wonderful to have updates on characters from the previous books in this one.
Garrick Helmsley is both a Scottish and English Earl. His uncle believes that he should have the Scottish title, not Garrick, and will do anything to take the title. In order to make sure that doesn't happen Garrick knows he must make an allegiance with a strong clan who will help if it comes to war with his Uncle. To make that allegiance he agrees to marry the clan leader's daughter. What he didn't reckon on is meeting Lady Emma.
Lady Emma is the sister of Bryce and Geoffrey Waryn, both featured in previous books. They are powerful and very protective of the ones they love. Emma often feels suffocated by them and is determined that when she marries it will be for love and to a man who won't boss her around. Definitely not an Earl or any man used to having his own way.
Garrick is friends with the Countess of Kenshire who is married to Geoffrey. He pays them a visit on his way to Scotland to meet his mother and make his betrothal official. When he meets Emma at the keep, there is an instant attraction between them. He is determined to keep away from her because of that attraction which he can't afford to have. He is shocked therefore when Geoffrey asks him to escort Emma to see her dear friend in the highlands who is expecting a baby. He can't refuse and the journey takes place.
As expected, the sparks continue to fly between them and the more time they spend together the more they realise that they want to be together. It isn't possible though, Garrick has to marry the woman his mother has chosen, and Emma always said she didn't want to marry an Earl. Is there any way that they can be together without war breaking out? Will Garrick lose his Scottish inheritance to his uncle? Is there any way he and Emma can have their happily ever after?
What a fantastic book this is, full of excitement, drama, lust and love. Garrick and Emma have some fabulously steamy moments despite the fact that they are trying to keep away from each other. Their blossoming love is beautiful to read but the whole time as a reader you can't help but dread the outcome if Garrick goes with his heart instead of his head. You want their happiness, but at what cost must it come? This book captured me from the first page and I enjoyed every moment of it, especially how it ended. How did it end? Well, you will have to read it yourself to find out! You won't be disappointed.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book.
When there’s a will there’s a way! A super sexy betrothed Earl falls head over heels in love with Emma, his complete opposite. An impulsive, opinionated girl whose every thought pops unbidden out of her mouth. She didn’t want a husband, especially an Earl, until she accidentally fell for an Earl who was already promised to someone else. How can they solve the problems keeping them apart without starting a war? Cecelia Mecca always writes beautiful, action packed, love stories. 😍
The Earl's Entanglement by Cecelia Mecca is book Five in the "Border" series. This is the story of Garrick Helmsley the Earl of Clave and Lady Emma Waryn. I have read (and Loved them) the other books in this series but feel this can easily be a standalone book. Garrick been in battle but now has returned home to find that he will have to fight his Uncle for the title and land that should be Garrick. Garrick is feeling pressure to marry a women that has strong family ties that can help him. Garrick is head to his mother in Scotland where on the way he stops by to see his friend Lady Sara who just had a very hard birth of her child. There Garrick meets Lady Sara's sister in law Emma. Garrick finds Emma very attractive and is thankful that he only has one night in her presents. But that isn't what happens he ends up taking Emma with him to help her get to see her friend Clara before she gives birth. Feelings are starting to grow and attraction is hard to fight, but Garrick is heading toward signing papers on a marriage to help him keep his Title and lades. Emma is in the dark about his possible up and coming marriage. Wow! This was such a great exciting romantic book that I just could not put down! Loved it!!
Emma is the younger sister of Geoffrey and Bryce. She is intelligent, stubborn, and full of zest. Garrick is an Earl of two countries. He is the definition of the strong, silent type. When these two meet there is an instant attract. Their personalities compliment each other perfectly, like an iron fist in a velvet glove.
Emma is determined to not marry someone who has any sort of "power". She wants someone who will allow her to do what she pleases and not dictate her. Garrick is on his on his way to his Scotland. His Uncle is making a claim for his title there and his mother wants him to marry an heiress from a powerful family to keep him at bay.
What follows is a nice sweet story full of ups and down for a couple who is determined to be together. I just love this series and can't wait to read the next. I want to see Graeme meet his match and see what is going on with Niall.
Great addition to this series! Garrick, the Earl of Clave is just back from the Crusades when he learns his Uncle is challenging his Scottish inheritance. In order to secure his claim, he agrees to marry the daughter of a powerful border lord. Emma is the sister-in-law of an old friend and ends up escorting her to Scotland. As they spend more time together the chemistry between them grows. Ending his betrothal could start a way. Will they find a way to be together? This is a fast-paced read with plenty of drama and suspense. I was hooked from beginning to end on the historical read, the characters are amazing and the story really draws you in. I loved it.
My heart is bursting with a warm smile inside as I turn the last page. This was a one sitting book because I could not bear to put it down. With phrases like “He wanted her more than he wanted to breathe “ this was a perfect romantic story. Garrick Helmsley is having to marry a bride he has not met to save his mother and their lands, as the alliance is crucial to the future. Lady Emma Waryn only wants to travel to see her friend Clara before she gives birth to her first child. But her brother Geoffrey was having none of it until he could travel with her. His wife Sara has just given birth so that time may be delayed. But as fate often does, Lord Garrick, Sara’s longtime friend stops at their home on his way to see his mother and sign papers for his marriage. Clara and Garrick’s first meeting is magical. I still feel that tingle just thinking about it. In the end Clara has Garrick and his men as escorts to see her friend because it is on their way to his mother’s. What Garrick does not tell Emma is that he is going to sign papers for his marriage contract. Can they ever be together without starting a war if he pulls out of the expected marriage? An expert in creating an intricate story with history and three dimension characters, Cecelia Mecca had me hooked from the first page. I fell in love with Clara and Garrick with all the suspense and twist in turns to this tale. Filled with the history of the Scottish and English borders, the romance and struggle for power will take you through a time in history that will stay with you after the story ends. This book, as all of Cecelia's books, will go on my to be read again list.
Book 5 of the Border Series is the best book yet. Garrett And Emma have met. Emma is determined to travel to Scotland To visit her dearest friend Clara. Garrett has Been to the castle of Countess Sara And Geoffery her husband. Emma finally convinces her brother Geoffery to let her travel with Garrett to her friends castle in Scotland. She has brought her maid , Edith, as her companion. Edith has never ridden a horse this far and on their stop the first night she will not be able to continue and insists on going back . Emma makes arrangements to continue on without Edith and will be traveling with Garrett and his guards without a companion. The two, Garrett and Emma have a private dinner at the inn and this is where the two begin to fall in love. Emma and Garrett have many problems after they fall in love trying to get their people to recognize that they truly love only each other. Read this enchanting page turner for yourself to enjoy this fantastic love story. Cecelia Mecca has done herself proud with this book. Can't wait for the next one. HAPPY READING TO YOU!!!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 How I love this series , it just seems to keep getting better , the stories drag you further into the Waryn/Scott World on the border between England and Scotland. Is their ever going to be a chance for them to be together? Read the book for answers , you will not be disappointed. Cecilia has a wonderful gift for writing and this series is proof of that .
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
I will admit to waiting with a certain level of impatience for each new story in this series and when it finally comes out, I eagerly read it. As in immediately. Because…well…I am a sucker for a good historical romance and when it happens to come in a series…oh yea.
The stories take place during the reign of King Edward and the men are strong and the women are feisty.
Likes: the location/timeline is unique to my reading, which makes the story building that much more entertaining for me. Given that this is a series; we will see many of the same characters traversing the different halls or at least made mention of. I always love the chemistry that exists between the hero and heroine and often the sudden “hit on the back of the head” when one or the other finally realizes that they are in love, for indeed, these stories all have a happily ever after. “The Earl’s Entanglement” is book five in Cecelia Mecca’s Border Series and while each story does work as a standalone, you really are best starting with book one
Sir Garrick Helmsley, Earl of Clave is on his way to his lands in Scotland to see his mother. She has been trying to persuade him to marry since he came back from the war in Acre. She has a bride in mind whose father is one of the most powerful clan chiefs in the area. His uncle thinks the Scottish property and title should belong to him instead. Lady Emma Waryn is living with her brother and his wife. While she loves them, she also doesn't like being always told what she can and can't do. Her brother is just as over protective as their father was. She wants adventure. A trip to see a friend who is expecting a baby is the ideal opportunity. A lively trip through the exciting borderlands between England and Scotland. Our hero has a very difficult decision to make, that choice might start a war or bring peace. Our heroine is a very determined young lady who goes after what she wants. Good fun, with great characters. A good adventure. I loved it.
This story was historical/medieval romance at its finest! The instant chemistry and attraction between Garrick and Emma drew me in. The dilemma of duty versus desire kept me enthralled. And, this singular line brought tears to my eyes, "He wanted her more than he wanted to breathe." (Insert big, swoon-worthy sigh here.) Can you imagine someone loving you and wanting you THAT much? It makes my heart skip a beat. I'm such a hopeless romantic. I probably should have been born as a character in a historical/medieval romance novel. And, if I had been, Garrick would have been the man for me.
I don't know how she continues to do it, book after book, story after story, but Cecelia Mecca is a master of the "warm and fuzzy glow around my heart" medieval romance.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
I was gifted with an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Nothing is more enticing to a man than something he cannot have. Garrick inherits a title when his father dies with ties to his Scottish mother. He already held a title in England. With his mother's encouragement, he agrees to marry the daughter of Mangus for an alliance between clans. Peace along the border was crucial at this time.
While accompanying Emma to a friend's castle for a visit, the Earl finds her enchanting. But there's nothing he can...for he's betrothed to another.
My favorite part of this book was the strength Garrick held in honoring Emma. While struggling with his own thoughts, he always held her better interests before his own. He was a true hero, in my eyes. It's a wonderful read that will keep you on the edge of your seat rooting for true love to win the day.
I thought this was a good read I'm a fan of this genre and would love to read more in this series The Earls entanglement can be read as a standalone . Look at this cover just wow everything about it just makes me want to jump him . The attraction between the hero and heroine had me to were I wanted them to be together and just fall for them . copy provided for honest review **************************************** hero=9 heroine=9 secondary characters=9 Chemistry=10 romance=8 humor= 3 darkness level=4 action= 4 mystery=4 enjoyment= 10 angst= 3 story line=10 Story ending=10 character development=10 pacing= 10 cover= 10 stars= 4 would I recommend this book=yes would I re read this book= yes would I read future books by this author= yes
What a stunning read! Ms. Mecca is a new-to-me author and I'm not sure how I haven't read anything by her before now.
It's true love at it's finest, an epiphany of what you want when you didn't know you wanted it. The attraction between Garrick and Emma is instant and deep but not without consequences. Garrick's betrothal to another lies between them but it isn't enough to keep them from wanting and needing each other.
Ms. Mecca paints Garrick and Emma's story with beautiful words and resonating power. It isn't just fate intervening--giving them to one another at the most unexpected moment--but a struggle between the wants and needs of a man who could gain so much and lose so much as well. It's an engaging tale, a must read to understand and grasp the entire scope, and it's one I'll definitely read again as well as recommend.
This is a great historical romance. Emma and Garrick are not supposed to develop an attraction for one another but they can't seem to resist the more time they spend time together. The problem is he has an arranged marriage to keep the peace and turning against his fiance could lead to a great deal of violence and death.
It is very well written and I really enjoyed the story and the characters. The author does a great job of creating an environment that feels true to the period. The characters are well developed and the relationship between the two feels authentic.
I love Ms. Mecca's Border Series. I especially love this book. It has become my favorite. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting characters I have met before and I absolutely love Garrick and Emma. I didn't envy our hero for the tough choices he was forced to make and just couldn't imagine how there could be a happy ending for our H and h. I highly recommend not just this book but the whole series!
I loved Emma’s story. Sparks fly when Emma and Garrick meet for the first time. Emotions are up and down when Garrick’s secret is revealed, but can they overcome all outside concerns to reach their happy ever after? This is a wonderful addition to the series and I look forward to reading the next book. Well done Cecelia. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The chemistry, the tension was so intense...it was captivating, enchanting...one page brings smile, the very next page showers anticipation and then there's nail biting tension...if I was not sure about the story being a HEA, I would have cried copious tears for better part of the story. I would have given it a ten star if possible.
Love this series and I loved this story, there is adventure and a bit of a dilemma as Garrick betrothed to save his title and lands falls for Lady Emma
Grab a copy and see what happens, and if love will win
I rec'd a copy and voluntarily leave my own thoughts
This book is a perfect example of why I love to read medieval romances! Garrick is truly a man of honor, willing to sacrifice his life and even his own happiness in service of his family and his country. When he meets Emma, his immediate attraction to her is tempered by the fact that he must agree to marry a woman he's never met in order to protect his mother and her estate. He's at war with his conscience the entire time, knowing that he'll never love any woman like he loves Emma and dying at the thought of her marrying anyone else, but also knowing he could never live with himself if he led his men to war just so he could have the marriage he wants.
Emma is a strong young woman herself, who can admit her love for Garrick yet not allow herself to pine away for a man who's already spoken for. Her friendship with Edith, her lady's maid, was a bright thread woven throughout that really showed her heart and made it impossible not to love her.
There's no shortage of passion here, but at the same time there's a true respect for marriage and Garrick will not dishonor Emma by acting on his feelings for her before he has found a way to untangle the whole mess. I'll admit that throughout most of the book I couldn't see an honorable way out of the predicament, but the author still had a couple tricks up her sleeve to ensure a HEA for all.
This entire series is absolutely enchanting, and it was lovely to visit with some of the couples from the previous books. I also hope that the author is planning to continue this series, as there are a couple more heroes from this book that deserve their own HEA. If I could find a fantasy time-machine, I'd love to be transported back in time to this author's version of the English-Scottish border in the late 13th century. Reading these books feels like I'm already there. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Earl and Knight, Garrick🐺🍆🌋💪🔪, meets Lady Emma💋💃 for the first time in the Castle🏰 Kenshire's stables, where she is attending a favorite mare🐎. Dressed for dinner in velvet, she just felt she had to check on the sick horse🐎. Garrick🐺🍆🌋💪🔪 is returning to his estate, Clave🏰, from a trip with eight of his knights. His father has died, and Garrick🐺🍆🌋💪🔪 is coming home to pick up the pieces. He is also supposed to get married. His mother is arranging a marriage for him in his absence to a woman he's never met in order to keep the peace and to keep his Uncle from claiming the Earldom. NO WAY! He stops at Kenshire's🏰 for the night, and to also see Sarah, the mistress of The Castle🏰, a woman he sees as a dear sister.
Lady Emma💋💃 is a guest at Kenshire🏰, but she's a long term guest. Her brother is the Earl there now since their father died, too. He is married to Sarah. An instant attraction goes between Emma💋💃 and Garrick🐺🍆🌋💪🔪. Garrick🐺🍆🌋💪🔪 is tall, dark, and handsome. Emma💋💃 is short, beautiful, and outspoken! 🎉🎆🔥
Garrick🐺🌋💪🔪 gets a vibe from Geoffrey, that he should stay away from Emma💋💃. Which makes no sense, since he's now an Earl of two land holdings, Clave🏰 and Linkirk🏰. Apparently, Garrick🐺🍆🌋💪🔪 has a reputation as a lady's man, and he needs to keep his big strong hands💪👋 and body off of Emma💋💃! YEHAW! Ride Em Bareback🍆, Cowgirl!🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
The book is an interesting, sexy look into the past, where a look, the touch of a hand, or a single sentence can signal desire between a man and a closely chaperoned young lady. As usual there is a fair amount of angst💔💕💔💕 between the two main characters. Does he💘, or doesn't he💔? Does she💘 or doesn't she💔?! Actually it fills up the book📑! Don't be 😨scared! A happy ever after ending lies in store!
The Border Series keeps getting better! I loved the interaction between Garrick, as the new earl with a reputation as a womanizer and headstrong Emma who did not want anything to do with another arrogant and self-righteous nobleman. Sparks do fly when they are thrown together for a trip to Scotland. Emma's protective brothers won't let her go to visit her pregnant friend in Scotland without an armed escort, and Garrick is reluctantly headed to Scotland for an arranged marriage with a Lady to help cement his Scottish holdings. War could break out if Garrick does not court the favor of powerful Scots, including his uncle. Duty in those days included marriage for power and politics rather than for love. The story is well crafted and Dr. Mecca does such a wonderful job of portraying an authentic and real setting for her medieval stories. So many historic novels set in the borderlands are almost silly in how the characters act but the Borderlands series transports you to the time and issues they are set in. Each book stands alone but I really enjoy revisiting the previous characters like Geoffrey and Lady Sara in The Earl's Entanglement. Her female characters are strong and independent, but appropriate to the time. As the attraction grows between Emma and Garrick, as well as the lust, their situation seems all the more impossible. If Garrick breaks his engagement he risks war and loss of his mother's lands in Scotland. His honor is also at stake, and he feels a sense of guilt (have to read the book) that he cannot shake. It is an entanglement indeed! It seems as though Emma and Garrick are doomed but you will love the ending (yes, you have to read it). There are some steamy scenes after the sexual tension almost ignites you e-reader too. Grab a copy now.
This book, and rest of series all 5 star books. This seemed to drag out their relationship a little, but didn’t keep me from enjoying this book. Would have enjoyed them spending more time together. Story had intrigue, suspense, as to where relationship was going and if would ever work out, and had some steamy scenes, adding to the story. Kept my attention what would happen next, and had some surprises. All the lines tied up well by HEA. I recommend this book, as I do the whole series. Can be read as standalone, but better in order, because of reoccurring characters. Waiting for next book in series.
This is a great continuation of the border series. ...Garrick Helmsley is an Earl in England and Scotland. He came back from the Crusades with awful memories. He discovers his Scottish holdings, Linkirk, are being challenged by his uncle,Baron of Inverglen. His mother pushes for him to marry, to which he finally agrees. Then he meets Lady Emma Waryn, Geoffrey Waryn is her brother. Lady Emma has sworn to never marry a powerful, domineering man. To her surprise Garrick has all these properties. What will she decide to do about Garrick? What will he do about his betrothed?
Wow, talk about falling for the wrong person! Only a double border Earl could come close to causing a war by falling in love with a lady from the wrong side of the border! I didn't want Lady Emma Waryn's and the Earl of Clave/Linkirk 's story to end but all good things must .... They love deeply, quickly and tumultuously and it is a glorious journey to witness. I loved the playful flirting between Lady Emma and Lord Garrick and the mutual respect they instantly had for each other! Must read!
My first book in this series. I loved the characters and all the character interaction. There was no clear cut path for Garrick and Emma but the journey the had was fill of ups and downs. I had to stay up and finish this one. The narrator did an excellent job distinguishing between the characters, switching accents and from male to female characters. I definitely recommend giving this one a listen.
I was very much looking forward to reading Emma's love story, and was not disappointed.Once again Cecelia has made another great book. I loved the chemistry between Emma and Garrick from the beginning. I like That Emma seems to bring out Garrick's more playful side, when he would otherwise be so serious. This was another great book in an already great series and I look forward to reading the rest.
