A fake marriage is the last thing he wants...and the one thing he needs.

Guy Lavallais never expected to marry. But when a nun overhears him making treasonous overtures to a bishop, she makes a shocking ultimatum: marry her or she'll tell all. And there is plenty to tell. Guy is a member of the Order of the Broken Blade, a brotherhood of knights seeking to tame King John—or if that fails, to overthrow him. If the wrong person learns his secret, Guy will die a traitor's death.

Of course, Lady Sabine isn't a nun at all. She was brought to the abbey against her will, and she'll do anything to escape. Even bribe a wickedly handsome mercenary. She tells herself the marriage doesn't matter—it's a temporary measure to protect her from her guardian. Once she and Guy part ways, she'll be free to pursue her passion. And yet, the more time she spends with the mercenary, the more he awakens other passions.

Their pretend marriage begins to feel very real, but Guy's mission for the order soon threatens both their arrangement and their very lives.

Sir Guy Lavallais has always known marriage is not for him. Yet, when a nun overhears him quietly plotting treason with a bishop, she blackmails him into wedding her. As a member of the Order of the Broken Blade, a brotherhood devoted to curtailing King John's broad abuse of power, Guy's loyalty is to his mission and his brothers and he'll let no one stand in his way, especially not his new, unwanted bride.

Lady Sabine de Stuteville is no nun, but was forced into the abbey against her will after her parents' deaths. She's desperate to escape. After several failed attempts to do just that, she's desperate enough to maneuver a mercenary into marriage, one she assures him will be temporary, only until her guardian gives up pursuing her.

The more time Guy and Sabine spend together, the more real their marriage becomes, but with the danger inherent in their treasonous plans, their lives may be forfeit before they even acknowledge their growing desires for permanency.

I thought Cecelia knocked it out of the park with The Blacksmith, this book's predecessor, but The Mercenary is stunning. There's romance, not just steam, although there's plenty of that too, but true, swoon-worthy romance that had me rereading passages just because the dialogue was so lovely. Beyond that, there's also the ongoing intrigue and sense of danger that comes with treasonous plotting, although not so much peril that it took away from the development of the main characters' relationship, if that makes sense. Guy was a fabulous mix of vulnerable and strong and has more layers than even he gave himself credit for. Sabine was a strong and independent woman without being at all shrewish or hateful; she acknowledged her own ability to fend for herself but also her new discovery of her preference for a life with Guy and she wasn't afraid to voice her opinions and ask for what she wanted, even when Guy himself was. I always love it when the hero and heroine actively choose each other and that pushed this book up into my favorites for the year.

This book is exquisite. It was everything I enjoy in a romance and I can't wait for the next one.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Mercenary is the second book in the Order of the Broken Blade series by Cecelia Mecca. It can be read as a standalone but if you can, I suggest that you read the books in order just for the enjoyment of having the full story of each of the members of the Order.

Guy Lavallais is a member of the Order and he has been sent on a task to gain support from a Bishop who is currently visiting a convent, a task that could be considered treasonous. What he doesn't realise is that during his conversation with the Bishop he is overheard by one of the nuns, a nun that wants something from him.

Lady Sabine has been sent to the convent by her guardian who didn't want the expense of another daughter to feed and dower after her parents were killed. She didn't want to go but had no choice and since that day she has tried many ways to escape. She isn't actually a nun, but wears a habit and if she doesn't escape she will be forced into being a novice and so on. It is Sabine that overhears Guy's conversation and in her desperation, she blackmails him into helping her to escape and to keep her from her guardian who will only force her back there if he finds her. The only way to keep her safe is to marry her, at least temporarily, divorce can come at a later date.

Guy never wanted to marry, he is a mercenary and has plans which cannot include a wife and definitely no children, but he does what he must, and he does wed Sabine.

What follows is the story of Guy carrying on with his work for the Order whilst keeping Sabine safe. It also sees them grow closer to each other as they find out more about each other's lives. There has been a physical attraction between the pair since the start, but is there any point consummating their marriage if they plan to go their separate ways? Guy's main concern has always been towards the Order and their goal, but it's much more difficult now that he has a wife to keep safe too. He is prepared to die for the cause, but he cannot let the same happen to Sabine.

This was a fabulous fast-paced story that ticked all the boxes for me. The intrigue of the Order's work and the danger and suspense of what would happen if Guy or any of the Order's treasonous activities came to light kept me on the edge of my seat. Who could Guy trust, would anybody betray him? His relationship with Sabine was a delight to read and I loved watching them grow closer. The passion between them was almost palpable and I loved the slow build rather than them just jumping into bed on their wedding night. Guy was a true gentleman and hero and made a perfect partner for Sabine. Their romance was swoon-worthy.

I cannot fault this book and I am more than happy to recommend it.

This book is not just good, it's great! It has everything I want in a historical romance novel; strong characters, questions to be answered in the following chapter, suspense and of course love.
What is there not to love. A mercenary and a nun (well almost anyway). Two polar opposites but we all know that opposites attract.
This is the second book in the series "Order of the broken Blade" and although it's freestanding where you'll find sufficient information within the story, I would recommend reading the first one as well.
Love this series and I'm looking forward to the next book. This author is amazing. So happy that I found her

Another engrossing, enthralling read that I read in two sittings. This is the second of this brilliant series, it could be read on its own but to fully appreciate it I recommending reading in order. Larger than life characters, a story that never lags, treasonous acts plus a lovely romance all make this a page turning, midnight oil burning read. I loved it & now eagerly awaiting the third book

High adventure, humour, and romance are all encompassed in this well-written Medieval novel. Having read the first book in this series, I was excited about The Mercenary and was not disappointed. I found myself hitting Google to read up on the background to the plot and realised once again just how well researched this series is. The irrepressible Guy Lavallais fears nothing and no one, but when a nun at the abbey where he has a secret meeting overhears his conversation, Guy is appalled not only that she had eavesdropped, but also at her outrageous demands. Despite having determined never to marry, Guy discovers himself before a priest saying his vows, but when the drab little nun removes her habit he is completely taken aback by her vibrancy and beauty. What started as a marriage of convenience, becomes a partnership in more ways than one. Guy discovers that Sabine's quest is much like his own and she has her own reasons for wanting to join his cause. The main characters in this book are immensely likable and I found myself wanting to be more like Sabine with her strong personality and ability to remain calm under pressure. Guy Lavallais is every woman's dream hero, but I am not at all sure I would have been able to handle him, and especially not when I was in my twenties! Although part of a series, this book is a standalone, however the plot does leave a door open to future books. I received a copy of this excellent book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Wow, I am loving this series!

Guy Lavallais is mercenary and the second knight we meet in the order of the broken blade series. The order is fighting to save the people of England from the corrupt King John. Guy is cocky, arrogant, handsome and extremely deadly. He’s not a man you’d typically trust or think honorable at first glance. Lady Sabine de Stuteville was sold to the nunnery by her guardian after her parents died. If she cannot escape she will have to become a nun.

She overhears a conversation where Guy is explaining the order’s mission, then blackmails him and insists that he takes her with him and that they temporarily marry. Guy is not marriage material. “And I will not be blackmailed. By a nun.” The book takes them on a journey to help Sabine escape her current situation and to further the order’s agenda.

Guy is now my favorite knight, well at least until the next book in the series come out! A swoon worthy swordsman who will fight for you to the death! He keeps Sabine on her toes about consummating the marriage. I can just picture that twinkle in his eye as he taunts her about their “deal”. ♥️“You’ve simply to make an offer, and I promise”—he winked—“not to refuse.”♥️

All the books in the series are stand alone but I enjoy and recommend starting at the beginning. The ending to The Mercenary had me psyched for The Scot and The Earl! My mind was working, trying to figure out the future storylines. I cannot wait for more! I was given an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.

Not well as well researched as it should have been

Or, a disclaimer written that the author was taking gross liberties with historical events and was changing whatever they felt necessary to make the novels work. I, for one, would have liked a more fleshed out story, with as much of the facts of true history that led to the signing of the Magna Carta used within the book. I also have noticed some glaring flaws in timing when the H and H were parted. Was it days, weeks, months…what? That was but one thing that was lacking. These read more like novellas than true novels. I will probably continue with the series, however, my critiques will become more in depth as the series continues. The writing, pacing and research should get better with each book, not remain the same or stumble backward.

Outstanding read! You know how normally the end of a book is winding down to its HEA with kisses and promises? NOT this one! I wanted to take notes at the ending knowing this would spill into the next book! I cannot wait for book #3!!

Who wouldn't love a mercenary? They are their own boss, sell their skills to the highest bidder, and never stay too long in one place. Add to that one who is well-known for his skills....and knows it...and you have our hero, Guy. One who would not allow a nun, well nearly a nun, walk all over him. But did he have a choice?

(MY FAVORITE LINES IN THE BOOK)
(Sabine)"I suppose I've not thought of you in this light, as a knight, despite knowing otherwise. This is the first you've used your title."
(Guy)"The title is meaningless. It is a man's training that defines him."

Tragedy struck Sabine of the worst kind and she found herself alone... living at the nunnery and wanting nothing more than to get away from the cruel man her parents thought would keep her safe. She's already tried to escape but to no avail. She had to find a way out, and after overhearing secret information, she gave Guy an ultimatum...get her away from the nunnery or she'd tell all. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Sabine's bold 'it is what it is' attitude humored me to no end.

It's an enemies to lovers story but it's far more than that. It's two people coming together for a purpose larger than themselves who fall in love when neither one of them intended to.

I was gifted with an ARC and wanted to leave a review. I give it 5 stars, two thumbs up, and cannot wait for the next book.

The Mercenary by Cecelia Mecca is book 2 in the Order of the Broken Blade Series. This is the story of Sabine and Guy. I have read (and Loved!) the previous book but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Guy is a mercenary who has come to a convent to speak to the Bishop there on a mission for the Order of the Broken Blade, which is a brotherhood of Knights wanted to keep King John in tow or overthrow him. Sabine has lost her parents ad her guardian doesn't need another mouth to feed so she has been forced to stay at the convent where she has been trying to escape from. When she happens to overhear the conversation of Guy's she thinks to blackmail him into marring her temporarily until to help her escape. Guy knows if he is exposed it could cost him his life and in danger the brotherhood. Never thinking or wanting to marry because of his chosen goal he has no choice but to accept the terms. But while they end up having to work together they end up building feelings for each other and what is to temporary doesn't seem to be what they want after all...but danger is near.
Exciting Read....Loved it.

I love this new series!!! In this story we follow Guy in this second book in the Order of the Broken Blade series. Guy may have finally met his match in Sabine, the nun. These two have great chemistry and while their story is hot, it is full of love too. These two are a perfect match. I can't wait for the next book and am hoping that this series does not end with the four original members. It makes me sad to think this will end in only two more books! Mrs. Mecca does a fantastic job of creating these stories that can put you right there in that time and place. I highly recommend all of her books!

Sedition, intrigue and coercion lead to a convoluted path to happily ever after. The book is a vividly descriptive story pulled me in. Sabine and Guy are an incredible pairing, their journey filled with sparring antagonism giving way to a dramatic romance. I enjoyed every moment of this story.

The Mercenary
Order of the Broken Blade #2
By Cecelia Mecca
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Guy Lavallais never expected or even wanted to marry for that matter. But after a nun hears him talking treason with a bishop, she blackmails him saying take me away with you and marry her or she'll tell all. She heard it all and she will use it as leverage. Guy is a member of the Order of the Broken Blade, a brotherhood of knights seeking to either tame King John or overthrow him. This is a very treasonous order and if the wrong person were to hear this well Guy would die a painful traitor's death.

Lady Sabine isn't really a nun and she sure doesn't want to be there either. She was brought to the Abbey against her will, and she's desperate to leave so she'll do anything to achieve those means and that includes blackmailing a mercenary. She tells herself that it is only a marriage of convenience and that it doesn't matter. She drills this into herself as a way of protection. Once she and Guy part ways, she'll be free to pursue her passion. But it seems the more time that she spends with Guy, the more he awakens other passions.

Now their pretend marriage is feeling more and more real as time goes on, but Guy's mission for the order soon threatens both of them and their lives.

Wow. Everytime I read a book from Cecelia Mecca it's better then the last. I'm almost speechless. This book was incredible. The characters danced around eachother teasing us readers until I thought I would go nuts. Never have I ever rooted for two characters more then Guy and Sabine. These two were destined to be together, but they needed to figure it out for themselves. They had a charisma that made me long to go back in time and push them closer. I absolutely adored this book. Ms. Mecca you have once again outdone yourself and I can't wait for the next book.

"A handsome knight. Friend to the bishop." She had an idea. Lady Sabine only wanted to escape the abbey, she was not meant to be a nun.
Guy was on a mission to speak with the Bishop on behalf of he and his fellow warriors, the Order of the Broken Blade. They were trying to amass support to pressure King John to adjust his policies on high taxes and his other unfair practices. He was able to talk to the man and gain his favor to support them and his coin to finance their efforts
But coming out of the secret meeting, who might he see? Sabine, who had been easedropping and was prepared to blackmail him into marrying her!
What a twist and oh my gosh, I don't blame her! Of course it was not for romantic reasons, just to get her away and from the abbey and her guardian who had basically sold her to them for coin. Well she could certainly start out thinking that way, but as he agreed under pressure to marry her or expose him as a traitor, he finally said "Guy Lavallais of Cradney Wrens." When she blinked he said, "You should know the name of your husband."
Then the journey began as Guy spirited her away from the abbey. A hasty marriage and then off on a to meet with the a group of mercenaires who were guarding King John and convince them with enough funds to go back to France and leave John exposed.
Guy was so multifaceted. A mercenary, a knight, feared by many, a good heart deep down that he tried to cover by seeming carefree and arrogant. Sabine was intent on unraveling the true person.
Cecelia Mecca has created two characters that kept me engaged to the point I could not wait to see what would happen next.
Two people, meeting by fate that really had the same mission, some of the same losses and an attraction that could not be denied!! Loved, Loved, Loved this story!!!

This series is totally blowing me away!!! I laughed, I cried and I sat on the edge of my seat holding my breath reading The Mercenary by Cecelia Mecca and is book 2 in the Order of the Broken Blade series and if you love medieval romances as much as I do you have got to read this book. Though in a series The Mercenary can be read as a stand alone but I would recommend that you read The Blacksmith first in the series to get the full picture and Cecelia can paint quite a picture in her writing. Her characters are just wonderful and you cannot help yourself in falling for Guy Lavallais the Mercenary with one of the best sword arm and bad boys in the country. I haven’t read such a captivating book in a very long time. I just could not put this book down. Yes, I read this in a day and I was so sad when I finished it. This story has a traitor to the king, an Oblate, escape, being sold to a nunnery, blackmail, a mission, independence, a temporary arrangement, kindness, an unwanted proposal, being orphaned, standing up for the right, mistrust, a cruel guardian, patience, a reputation, revenge, rebels and yes love. If you are a lover of Monica McCarty books you will love Cecelia Mecca’s books they are that good!!

The Mercenary: A Forbidden Love Medieval Romance (Order of The Broken Blade Book 2) by Cecelia Mecca.
Exciting historical plot that makes your bottom pucker hoping Guy isn’t betrayed and loose his head!
Guy is a hardened Mercenary and is one of the four members of the Order of the Broken Blade. Bound by oath to end King John of England’s tyranny he imposes over his own people.
Guy rides to an Abby to meet with a powerful priest to garner his support when a nun approaches him and tells him she heard their secret conversation so, if he doesn’t want his treason exposed he will take her with him when he leaves. Oh and Guy will have to protect her from her enemies and marrying her in truth, then after she helps his order by joining the fight against the King, then they can part ways! Wow! This is a deliciously delightful story with sexy warriors and a sassy Lady who is a force in her own right with this battle hardened Mercenary. The storyline is action packed with witty characters, adventure, and a comical slow burn romance that ignites the pages. I recommend this book and series to everyone who loves a great, well written story that warms the heart and the sheets.
Happy Reading♥️

This is another delicious book in the Order of the Broken Blade series!! I was in love with a blacksmith in the first book but now I'm in love with a mercenary:) My, oh my, can this author write stories, every time I think she can't outdo herself, she does!

Guy Lavallais is a mercenary and he's a member of the Order of the Broken Blade. He's on a very dangerous mission and what he wasn't expecting was to find himself married to an "almost" nun! Of course, he's just trying to help Lady Sabine who does NOT want to become a nun and wants to get away from her evil guardian. As they spend time together, feelings get involved but Guy is determined to continue on his own. Sabine has other ideas but it's an uphill battle!

Their adventure includes danger, intrigue, treason and passion....lots of passion:) I also enjoyed seeing some of the main characters from the first book as well as those who will have their story told in following books. I highly recommend this series!!

I was given an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The Order of the Broken Blade series has it all!! The backdrop of the historical Baron's War adds wonderful danger, suspense and intrigue; along with the passion and romance you come to expect from Cecelia. The four founders of the Order are very different and this story centers on Guy, the bad boy mercenary. But he is actually a very complex character who has more loyalty and honor than he leads you to believe. The members of the order are proposing treason against the bad King John of England and so they are in great danger. Not a good time to fall in love, but Sabine is desperate for help escaping abbey she was forced into, before she is made a nun. Sabine and Guy help each other with a "marriage of convenience" but they start to want and need each other more. Will their passion interfere with their mission? Will they have to separate? There is so much to this story that you will not be able to put the book down! And I cannot wait for the other books in the series

Sir Guy Lavallais meets with a Bishop to persuade him to use his treasure to support a revolt against cruel King John. The Order of the Blade needs coin to buy off the French mercenary army the king has camped on English soil to threaten his own barons. Lady Sabine overhears the handsome knight and blackmails him to help her escape the abbey and marry her so that her deceased father's overlord can not force her back into the abbey. Guy changes his plans and leaves with her, rides all night, arriving at another small convent in the morning where an elderly priest he knows marries them. This is another great romance by Mecca: Guy and Sabine are enigmas to each other, think they have life plans that will make short work of this marriage, but after lots of adventure each finds a true calling they never dreamed of in their life with one another! Good reading. I volunteered this review after reading an ARC.

This book is worthy of 6 stars! To say this book is awesome is an understatement. The Mercenary is the second installment in the Order of the Broken Blade and while each book can be read standalone, I am not sure why you would want to read only one. If you have read the Blacksmith then you know how great these characters already are. The Mercenary is Guy's story and it does not disappoint... well the book has to end so there is that. I love this series, in a time where title and status mean everything these four young men forge a bond as tight as any family by blood. They are truly dedicated to each other and their cause. The friendships are true, the love is hot and the loyalty is fierce. When I picked this book up I was captured from the start. The story flowed and kept me in suspense. Now that I have finished I am anxiously waiting for The Scot!

Another story of intrigue and romance in the Broken Blade series and I was hooked from page one as usual!! Sir Guy Lavallis is a scoundrel and rogue mercenary when he is caught talking treasonous matters by Lady Sabine at the abbey where she has been placed at.
Lady Sabine has attempted several escapes from the abbey but all have failed so when she hears these plans she begins to form her own escape plans by blackmailing Sir Guy into marrying her and taking her away from the abbey. Guy and Sabine are so incredibly great together but sometimes you want to wack Guy upside the head. Five stars are just not enough!! Can’t wait for the next in the series!! Sir Guy and Lady Sabine's tale as told in this , the second book to The ORDER OF THE BROKEN BLADE, is just as compelling as the first book, THE BLACKSMITH.
If you have read any on Cecelia Mecca 's books ,this new series is sure to captivate you. And as you may have guessed , each book deals with a member of the ORDER and their connection to one another, the bonds forged, the friendships maintained and a loyalty the goes bone deep.
Now I await the next book THE SCOT and i just KNOW it's going to be a success!

Chronique de Diana :

https://followthereader2016.wordpress...

Nothing was shown in this book.

The characters weren’t developed and they weren’t even shown enough to get to know them.
The main characters relationship was non-existent and then at the end they still got together. Throughout the whole book we don’t really see them talk, sure Guy flirts with her but that wasn’t enough to make their relationship actually believable.

The plot was in the background and even though it was talked about how they were part of the rebellion, but not much is shown with them actually doing things about it as sure they travel to meet someone but almost the whole journey is skipped over (there are about 2 or 3 stops that are shown but they weren’t very good either), the meetings with the person they were going to see are short and boring, and the ‘surprise’ was briefly mentioned which made it seem like it didn’t actually happen.

The ending was rubbish as I didn’t believe their relationship from the beginning so how was I supposed to believe that they would suddenly have a HEA.

I definitely won’t be reading any more books in this series and probably no more books by this author as I didn’t like how this book had lots of words that didn’t really show anything happen.

3.5 Stars (4 enjoy Maureen Driscoll, Elisa Braden)

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series)

Order of the Broken Blade (4 book series). I would recommend reading the books in order as the series tells a story and won’t make much sense reading the series out of order or reading one book alone.

this is the first time I’ve read Cecelia Mecca. I’ll probably read other series by her, just not in any ‘reading’ hurry to do it now.

Order of the Broken Blade:
The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like all the H/H for each book; very well paired as couples.

writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable.

All 4 books followed pretty much the same level of romance; a few kisses, around half way through book 1 or 2 oral scenes and 2/3 love making. All written rather quick no major description (i had to go back to see if i missed some pages lol).

I thinks i’d rate this book all around PG 14.
