He cared only for duty— Until he met the one woman who could claim his heart.
My mission is clear.
I’m to go to Murwood End, the land of the Voyagers, to retrieve the king’s secret son. With the heir dead, it’s our only hope for saving our kingdom from those who would destroy us.
But complications arise from the start. No one knows when the king’s son will return from his latest mission, or at least no one will say. And his closest friend—a woman, a Garra—seems to loathe me on sight. A further complication: I’m completely captivated by her. In Meria, Garra practice their healing arts in secret, but there’s nothing covert about this bold, beautiful woman.
In the beginning, I tell myself I’m only pursuing Aedre Lorenson for her connection to the king’s son, but I know it for a lie. She has awakened something in me, and I’m torn between doing my duty as the king’s commander and following my heart.

The start of a new series that promises to be as romantic and exciting as other books by this author, The King's Commander had me engrossed from the opening sentence and it only got better from there. Sent to Murwood End on a mission that he knows has little chance of success, Lord Vanni d'Abella encounters the Garra, Lady Aedre Lorenson, and quickly comes to the conclusion that she could well be the key to meeting his intended target. Despite her obvious disdain for him as well as his reluctance to entangle himself with any woman, their attraction for one another cannot be denied. When threatened, Vanni finds himself jumping to Aedre's defense and comes up with a solution to the problems she has been experiencing. Unable to leave Murwood End until he has at least spoken to Kipp Aldwine, Vanni is increasingly drawn to spending time in Aedre's presence. With the threat of war hanging over their heads, Vanni cannot stay in Murwood End and Aedre refuses to leave, bringing them to an impasse. This novel is part of a series but it nevertheless a standalone. It is well written, deeply romantic, and leaves the reader with a sense of longing for something more. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This is a sweet and powerful romance that will pull at your heartstrings, it’s a wonderful first book in this new series, and it’s written beautifully. Cecelia has written some wonderful books, even changing genres doesn’t phase her, neither it seems does going down the rabbit hole into a beautiful new world created just for the reader. With excellent characters and a storyline that promises to be out of this world, literally, I really can’t say enough positive things about this book. I wait with baited breath for the next. It’s written on a first person basis, set in a make believe world but in Medieval times, there’s a little of both Scottish and Viking traditions thrown in too, something for everyone. And it really works. Very enjoyable and entertaining, and highly recommended reading.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
As King’s Commander, Lord Vanni d’Abella knows exactly what his duty is during his stay at Murwood End. His king’s son and heir is dead and Vanni’s mission is to convince the king’s illegitimate son to return with him as the king’s successor, a key to preserving peace in Meria. But things aren’t exactly going smoothly. No one knows when to expect the hopeful future king home from his latest voyage and the man’s closet friend takes an almost immediate dislike to Vanni.
Though he can’t afford distractions, Vanni is enthralled by Aedre Lorenson, a bold Garra who practices her healing arts out in the open. Vanni tells himself he’s merely courting favor to gain an audience with the man he’s in Murwood to meet, but as he spends more time with Aedre, his outlook changes and he finds himself torn between his duty to the king who raised him as a son and the longing in his own heart.
This is such a great start to a new series! It’s got a little bit of everything going on with its Medieval, almost fantastical feel and it was something really refreshing and different. I loved the idea of Aedre being unexperienced but well-informed and making her own decisions. In fact, the whole idea of the people of Murwood End doing things their own way and recognizing no ruler was very intriguing and charming, not to mention the possibilities that dynamic opens. Vanni was totally enamored of Aedre almost from the get-go and gaining his outlook on the confusion he felt and how he struggled to process his newfound feelings made this so interesting. I was a bit nervous about this being written in first person as that’s not something I typically care for, but that decision, along with the dual points of view, gave us a lot more insight into the characters and their feelings and made them more relatable. This book held my interest and kept me rooting for this unlikely couple as they got to know each other, learned to communicate and recognize new feelings, and deal with outside threats. I also really liked the sibling-like relationship between Kipp and Aedre and I’m very much hoping he’ll get his own book later on. I’m loving this new concept and the feel it has and I can’t wait to see where this series takes us.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Vanni is commander and a trusted advisor to the king of Meria. The king's son and heir to the throne has died and Vanni is assiged to find the king's illegitimate son so he can be trained to be the kings new heir. He knows if he fails that the kings nephew could be king and that would cause their kingdom to go to war. He knows where his duty lies and cannot fail in his mission. What he does not expect is someone like Aedre to crash into his life. She is a special kind of healer called a Garra; healer of the heart. Aedre is best friends with the kings son (Kipp) and will do what she can to protect him. The mission really gets complicated due to the attraction Vanni and Aedre feel for one another.
What a great page turner. It is captivating to the very end; some books you know what the ending will be but not this one. It will keep you intrigued and anxious to see what happens next. I just love historical romances and Cecelia is one of the best with the adventures she comes up with; you will never be disappointed. This is the first story in the series and it was fantastic. I look forward to learning more about Kipp and hopefully he will get a story in the series. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The start of a new series Vanni has to go to Murwood End, the land of the Voyagers, to retrieve the king’s secret son following the Oryan sank drowning all bar one but Matteo the heir was on board & perished, hence my mission. Things don't go to plan from the outset, no one knows when the king’s son will return from his latest mission, or at least no one will say. And his closest friend—a woman, a Garra—seems to loathe me on sight. In the beginning, but Vanni is captivated by Aedre Lorenson he's torn between doing my duty as the king’s commander and following my heart. The author paints a vivid picture of the kingdom of Meria. The book is told from Vanni’s point of view & first person isn’t my favourite but I was so engrossed that it didn’t impact on me. It was a book that on one hand I wanted to read slowly to savour but on the other I couldn’t read fast enough to find out what would happen. Wonderful characters & an edge of the seat plot that was both exhilarating & romantic made for an unputdownable read, I can’t wait for the rest of the series My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Brilliant, just brilliant!!! The King's Commander, from the fascinating imagination of Cecelia Mecca is book 1 in this spectacular new series Kingdoms of Meria. Cecelia Mecca is a talented author whose stories come to life captivating the reader breathlessly.
I immediately fell in love with the Kings Commander, Vanni! He’s a man with a mission, noble, honorable and oh so sexy. Aedre is the passionate, bold and intelligent woman he sees as a means to completing his mission, or so he tries to convince himself as he comes under her spell. The chemistry and the dynamic is incredible between these two. Cecelia has filled this story with characters that come off the pages and pulled me into their tale.
Written in first person from the perspectives of our hero and heroine we gain a deeper understanding of their characters and their motivations. I loved the whole medieval feel of the story. I couldn’t put it down and this is a journey so worth the taking and a passionate love story you don’t want to miss.
Thank you so much Cecelia for pulling me into this fabulous new story. I look forward to more of Vanni and Aedre, Kipp, and the tale of the three kingdoms.
A wonderful beginning to a magical series. The Kingdoms of Edingham and Meria have been battling for a long time. Now with the Prince of Meria recently deceased, trouble brews within Kingdom Meria. The King's Commander, Lord Vanni d'Abella, travels to Murwood End to try to convince the King's illegitimate son to return to become the heir to the crown. Vanni meets a bold, intelligent woman, a Garra. Their attraction grows while he waits for Kipp's return, his life and beliefs alter. His mission with the King's son is a failure and being an honorable man, he returns home, leaving his heart behind. I loved the story and all the wonderful characters.
This was a little different for Ms. Mecca, but a thoroughly good book. I read it all in one sitting. Aedre is a heart healer in a village that is neutral in the war between two countries that used to be one. The village separated from the country of Mercia during the big split. Commander Vanni comes to the village on a mission from the king of Mercia. His mission fails, but he finds true love with Aedre. Their path towards that love though is rather rocky with death and misunderstandings along the way. All and all though a great read. I loved it and can't wait for the next one in the series to come out.
Fantastic start to a new series! The author does a wonderful job bringing another historical romance with strong ,well developed characters and an intriguing story line. Her pages come to life with her detailed and descriptive scenes ,taking you back to medieval days in realistic fashion. She pulled me right from the start and held me captive right to the last page reading Vanni and Aedre's story. It's well written ,moves fluidly and kept me turning the pages as fast as I could to see what was happening next, I loved and would highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
If you liked Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, you will LOVE this story. There's the small similarity of GOT where the brink of war is ever present for power in the kingdom and a touch of magic as in LOTR. The difference: a love so pure and powerful that it matters not what side you're on.
Meria, a kingdom of islands where kings and queens are always at the brink of war for power and an island called Murwood End where the peaceful reside refusing to take sides in war.
It's rare that I'm so immersed in a story, I forego my housework so I could read. But it happened with this novel. Forgotten was the housework and grocery store, I made a simple meal for dinner so I can return to this book. It's THAT good!!
I loved Vanni from the onset. The king's commander sent to Murwood End to fetch someone for the king. He's sent to do the king's bidding but knows there is a small (or no) chance he'd succeed. Once he arrives, Aedre catches his eye. He knows she would be one person that would gain an audience with this man if he can show her that he is not the person she thinks he is. What he wasn't prepared for was the emotions she has lit inside him like a torch, burning to be near her.
I also loved Aedre right away, a strong woman who can take care of herself and has a gift that has been handed down from generations. She's Garra, and although she is respected in Murwood End, others places in the kingdom look down upon her kind comparing them to witchcraft when it's the healing arts they practice. She didn't care for the newcomer, the reputation of his kingdom precedes him and her mind is set on disliking him. But sometimes, even a healer is caught off guard when the heart knows something she needs to learn.
FAVORE LINES IN THE BOOK: Eyes blazing, she (Aedre) doesn't move her hand away. The tip of her blade is so close I can feel its presence just above my skin. "Once again, you underestimate a woman's place."
What an OUTSTANDING read, I cannot say that loud enough. I can easily see this story being made into a movie with the way the author describes this world she has created. Buy the book, I promise you will not put it down. I was given an ARC but couldn't thank the author enough for this gift.
What a great start to an exciting new series of medieval romances! The King's commander is suspenseful, intriguing and totally romantic. Cecelia once again set up a backdrop that is full of danger, mystery and compelling characters. The books feel so authentic that you are transported into medieval times without having to go through those stones! There are two kingdoms that were split 150 years before and have been warring ever since. And then there is Murwood End in the middle that has not allegiance to any king or queen and the customs are very different. In Murwood, people are freer and women have more power and respect. Class and titles mean less here and Garras, healers with a unique connection to the sensual world, are free to practice. Aedre is a strong, sensitive and perceptive Garra and she meets Vanni who is second to the King of Meria. Vanni is on a mission but he becomes sidetracked by a strong attraction to Aedre. But the plot is complicated by bastard heirs to the throne, a power struggle with the church and their Shadow Warriors, and potential war with the other kingdom. The first chapter really grabbed me from the first words and never let me go. The romance is steamy and fraught with problems, making it all the more enjoyable. I cannot wait for the next story.
The King's Commander by Cecelia Mecca is the First book in the Legends of Meria Series. This is the story of Vanni d'Abella and Aedre Lorenson . Vanni has been sent by his King to Murwood End where Vanni is to try and convince the King's illegitimate son to return to be the heir. Vanni ends up meeting Aedre who he is taken with immediately but she is also friends with Kipp Aldwine who is the person he is looking for. Vanni knows that she will be the key to his success but also she becomes very important to him too. Vanni is the healer of her people and is somewhat guarded because of her occupation. So their journey to happiness has some bumps in the road. I enjoyed their story and look forward to reading more from this author. I do recommend this book.
Vanni, the King of Meria's First Commander, has traveled to Murwood End to convince the king's bastard son, to accept the position as heir to Meria's throne upon the death of his son, Prince Matteo. He arrives to learn that Master Kipp Aldwine is out to sea. But he is soon taken by a beautiful woman, a healer of the heart Garra, an independent and ardent feminist. Will Kipp accept his father's offer? Will the Garra refuse his offer of marriage? Will Vanni return to his king unsuccessful after losing a sword battle with Kipp? This book is well-conceived and an excellent read!
This was such a delicious read and you can't help but get immersed in the story! Being written in first person, I struggled a bit at the start but I soon got used to it:) Being the first book in Cecelia Mecca's new series, Legends of Meria, you get to meet a lot of the characters that I have no doubt will be in the future books of this series.
This is Vanni and Aedre's story and I absolutely adored both characters. Both are strong willed and although they have nothing in common, the heated attraction between them cannot be ignored. He has been sent to her island by his king and the last thing he expected was to fall for the Garra, a healer with a special gift. As they learn about each other, mystery, danger and power struggles with the church surrounds them. Very well written and I am now looking forward to the next books in this series!!
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Enter a new world created by one of the best writers of historical fiction and find yourself lost in her imagination. Two kingdoms that have been at war forever and a third one in between called Murwood End which holds allegiance to either place.
Lord Vanni, the King's Commander of Meria, travels to Murwood to seek out the King's bastard son, Kipp, since his blood son has just perished. When Vanni sees Lady Aedre, a beautiful, defiant female who is special powers in the healing arts. What he did not realize is she had already spotted him and felt almost frozen at how handsome he was....
Magical, romantic, a little suspense and a whole lot of sparks that will carry you through until the end. But I warn you, be prepared to sit down and not get up until the last page is turned! Simply enthralling!
Brilliant introduction to the Kingdom of Meria. This book sets the scene and gives the reader an insight into the political problems, which I am sure will play more prominently in future stories. When Vanni arrives at Murwood End at the King’s behest, little does he realise how his life and beliefs will change. Aedre is not afraid of the stranger, but when she meets him at the docks, there is an attraction which is so strong, she is overwhelmed. Coming from different worlds, can they find a way to be together? The banter between the main characters is very realistic and I kept wondering what they would come up with next. I am really looking forward to reading the next in this series, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of Kipp. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
From one world to another, Cecelia Mecca has done it again with this new series. We are transported to a new land, the Kingdon of Meria, and are drawn in to it. A new heir to the throne is needed and the King’s Commander Lord Vanni must go and convince the king’s illegitimate son to agree to be his father’s heir. Little did Vanni know that the Garra Aedre, Kipp’s closest friend, would have the influence on him that she does. Only Aedre and her father know the truth about Kipp.
Vanni takes his mission seriously but is taken by surprise at how things change him. Nothing comes before his duty to the king, until now. This story draws the reader right in and leads us on a journey that you need to read yourself to find where it will take you. A wonderful first book in a series of many surprises in store for us all.
Aedre is the local Gara skilled in all things love, sex, fertility, and happiness in the bedroom but yet a Virgin! Vanni is the Kings Commander there on a mission! They both are distrustful against each other since they both hold secrets! I love how the chapters show each person perspective! Aedre has courage and she is a black smith daughter as well! I love how she has multiple rolls, she keeps secrets, loves fiercely and adores her independence! Vanni has known many women, fierce in battle doesn't understand love and never thought to marry! Well preconceived notions aside! One day we meet that one that changes all the rules! The banter and chemistry is off the charts! The end is unexpected and takes a lot of courage! I already love this series!!!

Vanni🐺🍆⛲🔪, the King's Commander, is dispatched with a few men to try to persuade Aldwine, the errant son, to come back to Meria.
Vanni🐺🍆⛲🔪 never thought he would meet a healer woman along the way, and fall in love💘...
This book was slow slogging for me. There is a lot of talk and not much action.
Vanni is on a mission to bring the King's son, Kipp, back to their kingdom so that he can be made the heir. Unfortunately, Kipp is currently out at sea, so Vanni must wait for his arrival. In the meantime, he befriends a woman that appears to be close to Kipp in hopes of learning more about him. But what he didn't expect was to feel such a strong attraction for the woman.
Aedre knows that Vanni is just getting close to her to learn more about Kipp, but she is intrigued by him so goes along with it. He seems to awaken something in her that no one else has ever been able to. But knowing that Vanni will be leaving soon, can she let her heart get involved?
I really enjoyed Vanni and Aedre's story. If you are a fan of the show The Last Kingdom, then you will enjoy this story. The book is written in 1st person, so that took a bit of getting used to... I enjoyed watching these two just spend time together and come to learn who the other was. This is a great start to a new series.
A great start to this new fantasy series from Cecelia Mecca. If you are a fan of historical romances it encompasses a little of everything set in a medieval type of time period including knights (Southerners), vikings (Voyagers), religious figures, and highlanders. You see a lot of the differences in cultures and women’s roles between the kingdoms in this first book.
Lord Vanni d’Abella, Commander to the King was orphaned and taken in by the king and taught everything he needed to learn in order to command the king’s military. He is sent on a mission to bring back the illegitimate son of the king, Kipp Aldwine, because the king’s heir Prince Matteo along with 200 soldiers just died to the sea. So Vanni heads to Murwood End where he meets Aedre, a Garra or “love healer” and daughter of a blacksmith. Where Vanni and the king reside in d’Almerita, Garra’s are not well received because they are blamed for the initial break up of the kingdoms and women in general adhere to the typical historical roles we’ve seen in our own past. Aedre grew up with Kipp and therefore Vanni tries to gain an audience with him through her so that he can talk him into going back to d’Almerita as the successor to the throne. Vanni and Aedre have chemistry from the start, so will they become something more or will their differences keep them apart? And with the Kingdoms on the brink of war, what does that mean for them and Kipp who has never been interested in the king or being an heir to the kingdom? This series really has the potential to go many different directions as far as what will happen with each kingdom and I’m interested to see who the romantic characters will be in the follow-up books. I received an ARC of this book and chose to post my review.
This is an awesome new series with fabulous World Building, a wonderful story and great characters. There are three Kingdom's that are continually on the brink of war. After tragedy strikes Lord Vanni must travel to one of the other Kingdom's, it is there he meets Lady Aeder. They have many differences but one thing that is undeniable is the spark that exists between them. I am a huge fan of Cecelia Mecca and I have very high expectations when it comes to her writing and as usual The King's Commander did not disappoint. I cannot wait for the next installment in the Legends of Meria.
This book has two main characters that live in two different places and they have very different ways of living. Where Andre lives is a mountainous area by the sea and Vanni lives where there are no mountains. A few of the big differences are that there is no king that rules and there are no boundaries of what someone can do. For instance Aedre helps her father in the foundry. Just because she is a woman doesn't mean she can't do something a man can do. She is also a Gerra. A healer of hearts where love is involved.
Vanni is the kings commander. He has grown up where women are more demure. Men have the physical jobs and women stay clean and pretty. The people all follow the commands of the king.
Vanni is not use to having a women speak boldly and Aedre speaks her mind. They are at odds with each other but there is a pull neither can fight. A life together would never work but they simply cannot stay away from each other. I loved the way both Vanni and Aedre fight the attraction. An very entertaining story to stay off this series!
The King's Commander Legends of Meria #1 Cecelia Mecca ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
As usual Cecelia Mecca has started out a new series with a bang. This is one romantic book that had me from the get-go. The Kings Commander Vanni is sent to Murwood End to fetch a special person. You see the King's son has died and he will not let his nephew have the throne so he must try to find his bastard son so that he will have an heir, but as usual it is easier said then done. Aedre is a special woman all on her own as her Amma has taught her the old special healing ways that people don't always believe in. Right from the moment Vanni sees Aedre he knows there's something about her and he wants her even though he shouldn't because he is on a mission for the king. He tries to tell himself that he is only pursuing her for her connection to the kings son, but even he realizes that he's only lying to himself. At first she loathes him, but all of that changes as time goes on and they get to know eachother. In the end Vanni must leave and Aedre refuses to go with him. Will she eventually give in and go or will they for ever be separated and left very unhappy?
Cecelia Mecca is absolutely brilliant and I cannot stress that enough. This is going to be one heck of a series and I personally cannot wait to savor each and every page of each book. It was utterly beautiful to witness the love that bloomed between Vanni and Aedre. I almost felt like a peeking tom at times. These are well matched characters and I suggest you pick this book up and give it a whirl because you will be blown away.
The King Galfrid of Meria’s son has died in a ship wreck and now the kingdom is getting ready to be at war unless the King’s Curia Commander Lord Vanni d’Abella travels to Murwood End to find the king’s bastard son Kipp Aldwine. Murwood End is a peace loving village where the voyagers live, mainly the King’s son. He meets a beautiful young Garra and is quite captive by her even as he tries to win her trust to find Kipp, the king’s son. Lady Aedre is distrust full of the newcomers to their village, but knows she must protect her friend Kipp she grew up with and who’s like a brother to her. Vanni’s mission is to bring the king’s son home to Meria, or they’ll be preparing for battle with the king’s wicked nephew who will try to take control of Meria and destroy everything in his path to conquer the kingdom. Vanni and Aedre know there destined for greater things in their life, Vanni must convince Kipp to return with him to Meria to protect the people from war, but their hearts and souls have fallen. Will their love survive or will they go their separate way and live a despondent life without a love of a lifetime? A captivating book and a great start to start the new series with love, war, adventure and mystery for everyone. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the excellent book.
SPECTACULAR… WHAT A WAY TO START A NEW SERIES!!!! The King's Commander by Cecelia Mecca is book 1 in the new series Kingdoms of Meria and what a way to start, I could not put this book down. Cecelia is definitely one of today’s most gifted author and I cannot say enough about this book. Oh the story, the characters, the descriptions are truly amazing. What I really loved about this medieval book that it is written in each of our hero and heroine’s persecutive which is such a unique way of telling a story. I am holding my breath until book 2 comes out, I am that excited. This story has a healer of love who is a strong women, a king’s commander, death, grief, a hero and heroine from 2 different worlds, loyalty, trying to make peace, the best swordsmen, trying to convince a illegitimate son to be the concession to the king, a loving father, true friends and yes…falling in love but can two people who have different beliefs be together? Can they learn to conform to one another? You will just have to read this book to find out and I so recommend that you do. It will not disappoint.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Cecelia Mecca’s latest offering is the much anticipated “The King’s Commander” and it was a grand read. There are so many things about the story that I found enjoyable. As someone who enjoys a good period piece, I really liked the feel for the story. In a typical society that is heavily patriarchal with a heavy dose of religion to keep people (especially women) in check, I loved Aedre’s character and her role as a Garra, which flips the whole concept of a male-centered, religious-focused society on its head. She was a refreshing character and thoroughly enjoyable. And as much as Vanni is her antithesis, they were a match well-made. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t add that he’s equal parts charm and warrior hot.
There are many ranks of Commander, but the King’s Commander is the highest rank. Lord Vanni must travel on a mission for the King. To make a request of a man who hates the King. While he waits this mans return his interest becomes focused on Lady Aedre. A healer who may not accepted in his world, but who is outspoken and fascinating in her world.
The town he waits in recognizes no King (or Queen). But over time he wins some favor with the town folk. Mostly through his acumen with a blade.
Aedre is half healer and half blacksmith assistant to her father. She heals the heart, and until this time had not felt the pull a heart can have. Fascinating interplay on multiple levels. Entertaining and romantic. These characters favor duty over personal gain. But when the heart is involved all bets are off.
Definitely ready for more in this series!
