David Lough I was struck by the wonderful letters between Winston Churchill and his mother while researching my previous book 'No More Champagne: Churchill and His Money'. So many of Winston's genes come from Jennie Jerome, as she was born in America. Jennie was virtually a single parent to Winston from the time he became a teenager - and fully so once when her husband died after Winston's twentieth birthday.
Mother and son were much closer than has been recognised and she pulled the early strings in each of Winston's military, writing and political careers. They wrote to each more than a thousand times over forty years: I have traced about 800 of these letters - and included some 450 of them in this first-ever of a wonderful correspondence that tells so much about the writers and their age.
