Elizabeth Doyle Carey The town I visit in Long Island (East Hampton, NY) has a robust Junior Lifeguards program that runs every summer. The local paper (The East Hampton Star) covers it diligently and the photos of all the kids who participate are very inspiring to me. One of the best things aspiring writers can do is connect with an editor who needs things written for hire (easier in the world of children's books, where freelance writers can write for branded/licensed/proprietary series). You can get some work published easily this way and start to build a good network, plus have some book covers to put on your website, and an editorial contact to boot!

The second best thing about being a writer is that it is a portable job. (It also allows you to take the occasional nap during the workday (see previous question!).
Elizabeth Doyle Carey When I have writer's block, I usually google around, but it doesn't help. Only two things really work: a fifteen minute nap on the couch in my office and just starting to write-- even if it is nonsense.
