Deborah Gabriel The idea for Inside the Ivory came about after I had established a network for women academics of colour called Black Sister Network. It's mission - self-empowerment, requires that we engage in collective activism, so the book became a mission for justice!
Deborah Gabriel I am inspired all the time - by something someone said, an experience I have had, something I have read, watched or listened to. I have way more ideas than I have the physical time to develop!
Deborah Gabriel I'm currently working on research at the analysis stage. The data (interviews) have already been collected so I am working with another academic to draw meaning and interpretations from the findings.
Deborah Gabriel For me, the cause of writer's block is usually driven by a fear of not knowing what to write, rather than having nothing to say. The underlying cause is more often than not failing to create the conditions for free thought and concentration. So it is usually solved by dedicating time to write by switching off from everything else so there are no distractions (no emails, social media radio or TV and phone switched off!
