Before It Was Legal: a black-white marriage (1945-1987)
As a girl I heard whispered references to my aunt's sister, white, who had married a black man and moved to Mexico. In 1985, while vacationing in Mexico City, I met Anna and Daniel. I was impressed with their obvious love for each other. Although I had no experience writing anything more than college papers, I asked if I could come back and interview them at length. In 1986 I returned and spent eleven days in their home. But the story I got was not what I expected--certainly not one of happily-ever-after. Thirty years later, after I'd "matured" and come to understand the complexities of love, I finally figured out how to tell their story.
