Roy Sheppard Hmm. Interesting question. People have asked me if writing is a 'calling'. No - its probably an addiction or a compulsion. What I really like is when someone writes to say that something I wrote helped them to feel better about themselves.
Roy Sheppard Just write and write - eventually you will write something that is worth keeping!
Roy Sheppard I don't get inspired, I get perspired! I write at 5am, for 5 hours every day! No time for inspiration. :-)
Roy Sheppard Lots of my friends have teenagers. I don't. They never listened to their parents of course. So often they'd say "If you won't listen to me, why not go and have a chat with Roy. He'll tell you things straight." After I'd had a lot of similar chats with young guys and young women, I came to realise that low self-esteem was a huge issue for almost every young person. So I started asking them, if I wrote a self-help book for young people what would they want it to include. So I did one! I wrote the book for young guys first. One then HAD to be done for young women too. :-) Originally this was going to be done by a female friend (Lyndsay Russell) who is also a successful novelist (check out her satirical book about a world where being a 'large' women is something that everyone is proud of! Called "Making it Big") Any way, Lyndsay had other commitments so I went ahead by interviewing loads of women of all ages. Including her 15 year old daughter - Lyndsay then got so interested in how the book was progressing - she became my editor - and did a brilliant job. The insights of so many women transformed this book. Readers seem to love the balance between the male voice (mine) and all the other women offering their pearls of wisdom. So - that's how it all happened.
