Rupert Smith Just get on and do it. Get something under your belt. And for God's sake, plan plan plan. If you don't know where it's going, then how on earth can you plan your effects and make it satisfying for the reader? Books are for readers, NOT writers.

Rupert Smith Usually starts off with a setting, a milieu, and a bunch of characters, or even just a title. Sometimes it's been 'I want to do a horror story set in a seaside town' or 'I want to write about London clubland in the 70s when I was young'. Sometimes it's a more complex process.
Rupert Smith I did a lot of research into the history and culture of the inter-War period, and I wanted to write something about that. The idea for Interlude grew from there, spreading outwards over time and involving later generations.
