The idea came from an article I read about Centralia Pennsylvania where the mines are still burning after four decades. I thought about it being a place where people who wanted to escape prying eyes might move, in particular a group of moonshiners. Then I added in the thought of a religious cult arriving to pray at the gates of hell and the book took on a life of its own.
