One part of Kell is based on a number of different real people, and research I carried out, about people with PTSD. Malomir is a little inspired by Mad Mardigan from Willow, played by Val Kilmer.

Short answer, start with the novella.
Longer answer. So, the novella prequel spoils something about one of the characters, who is one of the main POVs in Battlemage. So it gives you an extra jolt, but once you get into Battlemage, that reveal does come, so maybe it just gives you a head start, and some extra info in your back pocket, that people who have only read the trilogy, still don't know!

Hmm, so technically you can read Mageborn without having read the other novels. I've recapped some stuff from the past where relevant and shorthanded some events, but this is a new trilogy, with new characters in the lead (for the most part). If you read it, like it and want more info on what came before, and certain characters, then you will find some of that in the previous trilogy. However, I would say the story of this trilogy builds on what came before and you would get a more rounded, detailed and layered experience by reading the Age of Dread first.

Hi Roger,
The second trilogy, the Age of Dread, is a follow on series set in the same world. It works for new readers, but for those who have read the first trilogy there is some crossover and easter eggs, some familiar faces, but also new faces too. Mageborn, book 1, comes out the first week of October 2017.
Thanks
Stephen

Arrakis, become a Fremen in the time of Paul and ride a sandworm. Either that or get fat and old in the Shire surrounded by Hobbits.
