Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and Jamie MacKenzie Fraser, from Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. They're so beautifully drawn — fiery, funny, and rich in their love. The fact that she's from another time and place ads such an interesting perspective to the story and her observations of the world and their lives together. Claire and Jamie definitely get my vote for favourite fictional couple.

Write, write, write. And publish. Don't wait for permission. Writing has the great advantage of being both solitary and able to be done for a very low cost of production (say, compared to making a feature film). Go write! And then be willing to show it to people.

Inspiration comes from anywhere, which is both a cliché and a truth. A line someone says on a podcast, or a lyric to a song, or a snippet of conversation that you overhear, or the fact that that guy across the cubicle farm at the office has the theme to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as his ring tone -- all of it is the input to inspiration.

This idea for the book I am working on came from a writing exercise during a class I was teaching. It was one of those timed, write-as-fast-as-you-can exercises where I gave a first line and then everyone took it from there. I do the exercises along with everyone, and two minutes later, there was a germ of an idea there that I really, really liked.
