Other than the Feline Overlord meow-ing, it is usually quiet if I'm writing at home. Although some mornings I do put on music. If I'm out writing at Panera or the library or ... wherever, I definitely put on music to drown out the horrible musak most of those place play :-)

Deadlines are probably the best inspiration. Otherwise, almost everyday there is a news item, a snippet of conversation, or encounter that makes me think "wouldn't that make a great story ..."
