I wanted to find out what would happen in a world whose culture was standard-issue high fantasy (complete with wizards and dragons) when history actually happened -- when there was progress rather than an eternal Medieval stasis. That was one source of inspiration. The other was, I had been watching reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I liked the idea of an ensemble cast of teenagers battling evil. My characters are not modeled on Buffy and her friends, but the shape of the ensemble is not too different.
