Michael Haskins My non-fiction was mostly journalism that often required research. I think researching helped me in my fiction writing. Short news stories helped me keep my fiction short as I could and I just naturally fell into short chapters. I think it's considered "USA Today" syndrome. Tell it all, but keep it short!
Thanks for asking.
Michael Haskins You can only do this in Key West. I sat in the Smokin' Tuna Saloon and the bartender laughed and told me they had Guinness, just for me! When asked how I'd gotten the taste for it I told the story of my Uncle Dick and that led to my years at Molly Malone's in L.A. That made me remember the bartender Cecil and I wondered where he was today. So I made Cecil the bartender Mick Murphy's cousin and the book became a quest to find Cecil.
Michael Haskins Reading newspapers, I often look for the small filler article that usually has a strange twist to it and I wonder how I can bring it to Key West or how does Mick Murphy get involved. When I find that thread, then I have to see if I can write a novel or short story.
Michael Haskins Just released NOBODY WINS and will begin a road-trip to two locations, the Panhandle of Florida and New Orleans, for research. I will begin the book because it opens in Key West but need the road-trip to get the other locals where Mick Murphy goes right. That's important to me.
Michael Haskins All writers, not matter where they are in the pecking order, need to do two things religiously, 1) have a daily writing routine and stick to it and 2) read. Reading other writers' works and learning from what impresses you and what baffles you in those books, is important and a learning experience.
Michael Haskins You get to be your own boss, however the boss can often be a real tyrant!
Michael Haskins I don't get "writer's block" as such, but do get stuck in a story and have to find a way out. A ride usually helps.
