Maryka Biaggio I would love to travel to 1920s Paris—the fashion, the food, the literary scene, the cafes, the jazz clubs, the Champagne—ooh la la! It was a heady time, with many Americans finding a home there when America wasn't very welcoming. Think Josephine Baker, Djuna Barnes, and Gertrude Stein. The sexual revolution didn't find its way to America until decades later. If only I could really go back, I'd throw myself into improving my miserable command of the language.
Maryka Biaggio I'd have to say Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. I know that's an utterly predictable answer, but for good reason: Jane Austen has created a tantalizing love story for these two characters. And she keeps readers guessing (at least the first time one reads the book!) about what might happen, if anything. between these two. Elizabeth's spunk and quickness to judge (her prejudice) keep her from seeing Darcy's truth worth, although his pride does get in the way. I love this novel's twists and turns.
Maryka Biaggio Hi Elise, Wow. It's been a long time since I last saw you. I left Pacific University in 2004 and haven't looked back. I still do some higher education consulting, which I enjoy. But mostly I write historical novels--and I love it. Parlor Games was great fun to research and write. San Diego is a wonderful place to live. Hope you're happy and thriving. Maryka
Maryka Biaggio I'm finishing the story of a child prodigy writer and hoping my editor will like it. Meantime, I'm researching my next project, and I'm considering several fascinating women from recent history.
Maryka Biaggio I don't believe in writer's block. I stick to my schedule to write every morning (sometimes even on weekends to keep the juice flowing). The words come, even if they need extensive revising later. Revision is the part I love most.
Maryka Biaggio Getting absolutely lost in the world I'm creating. I LOVE the feeling of seeing the scenes and hearing the dialogue as I'm writing.
Maryka Biaggio Take workshops, go to writing conferences, subscribe to magazines about writing, start or join a critique group, find a good mentor or two, but mostly, read, read, read.
Maryka Biaggio I have always wanted to write a novel (yes, it's a cliche, but true). But I never felt I had a good subject. Then, after I did some genealogy research, I decided historical fiction was the thing for me and I was off and running.
Maryka Biaggio While I was traveling through Menominee, MI, the hometown of my protagonist I stumbled across a pamphlet about her life. I couldn't resist purchasing it, and May turned out to be a wonderful subject for PARLOR GAMES.
