There was not an island that inspired the story, but it was heavily influenced by the town of Port Gamble, Washington. The real town is not large enough for what I had in mind, but Copper Cove started with that. And I apologize for not finding your question sooner.

I always have more on my list than I can manage to read, but here are a few that have caught my eye recently: Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Grann; Salt Houses, by Hala Alyan; Antelope Woman, by Louise Erdrich (I read Antelope Wife years ago and loved it); Lowland, by Jhumpa Lahiri; The Bear and the Nightingale, by Katherine Arden.
