Emily Russell Practically? I'm sure I'll catch flack for this, but I'm going to be honest.

Stop measuring success in writing the way you're probably measuring it--making a living, or, if you're especially naive, getting rich. This doesn't happen to very many people.

Measure your own success, instead, in how much work you produce, and how proud of it you are. Only one novel? Is it the best, the VERY best, novel it can be?

That's succeeding.

Also, if you want to be a writer, make writing a priority. Find time to do it, even if it's just an hour a day. I recommend time, and not a specific word count, because if you're actually writing during that hour, the words'll stack up, and typing with your cursor glued to the word count button isn't doing you any favors as to the flavor of your prose.
Emily Russell I mostly just sit down and do it, usually for at least an hour a day. If you wait for inspiration to strike, you aren't going to get much writing done.
Emily Russell Probably getting to say you're a writer. Then you just hope like hell nobody asks you to prove it.
Emily Russell The sequel to Aurian and Jin, Little Bird, will be available 9/15/15, because I really like it when things are divisible by three. I've also got a non-related fantasy novella, The King's Might, coming out 7/13/15, because when you can't divide, go prime.
