My advice for aspiring writers is to find a topic you really enjoy. You will find researching and writing about it will be more fun and you are more likely to stick with the process.

I teach as my full time job, so I don't get to sit down and write as often as I would like. When I get writer's block I leave it alone for awhile, which may be several weeks. However, I still let the ideas float around in my head during this time and when it is time to write again it comes out easier.

The best thing about being a writer is when I get a note from a reader claiming that they didn't like to read until they read my book. That makes me smile.

I have a story that is written, but still needs some polishing before I send it out for editing. It follows the format of the Encylopedia Brown Series in that each chapter is a short story that follows the same character. It is titled "The Old Red Car" and is loosely based on some of my memories and imagination growing up with an old red car that was no longer used.

As a teacher, I saw many of my boy readers were having a hard time finding fiction books they enjoyed reading. There is a smaller market of good books for boys ages 8 to 10 that are not strong readers. I thought I could take my hobby of old cars and create a fun story for them to read. I also included "Did You Know?" facts in each chapter to draw in readers who like the non-fiction facts.

I wanted to continue "The Mud Hole" story into the winter season. I have seen pictures of Model T's with skis and thought it would be fun to have Henry put skis on the Model T for his next adventure.
