Margaret Mehl A book, tentatively titled, 'Sounds of Modern Times: Japan’s Changing Musical Culture, 1850-1950.' In this book I intend to both look more closely at provincial Japan (so many accounts focus on Tokyo) and at Japan in a global context. I will also write about why music can be such a fascinating field for historians: music is closely connected with almost all aspects of human life.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Margaret Mehl I have been playing the violin since I was a child. During my last years in high school and first couple of years at University I had a Japanese violin teacher. At university, I studied history and Japanese Studies, and I have now been teaching the history of Japan for many years. At some point it seemed natural to combine my interests in music, history and Japan, and to write a book about the history of the violin and Western music in Japan.
