For The Suicide Club, I had always wanted to write a book about girls and the bonds they form. I was visiting my family at Christmas and was stuck in bed with the flu. I was feeling sorry for myself and suddenly had the idea for the first chapter. I always bring my laptop when I travel, so I got up and wrote it in a rush. I workshopped it in my fiction writing class and then sent it to Ms. magazine where it appeared in slightly different form as a short story. I had quite a few people write to me thanking me for writing their story. I also got an agent who helped me sell my first novel Molly.
