I love working at home on my own schedule. I can tend to family and be available and flexible...also I like to live with my work, it is there on the wall to walk by and be in ongoing conversation with.

As an illustrator I usually start with what I want to draw, but sometimes it is a concept, as with Cricket Song and the idea of sensory connection. I keep a notebook handy and an ear open for themes...like the idea of frogs being the alarm clocks of spring...that became Possum and the Peeper.

Although I wouldn't really call myself a writer so much as an illustrator, either way, I clean house, garden, etc and then come back to it. I go look at other people's books.
