I don't believe in it. Just write. All writers go through lower times of productivity. I believe in just getting to the work and trusting that eventually something of value will emerge. A lot of practice goes into a finished work for me.

Don't wait for inspiration. Look around you. Listen to conversations and observe people. Don't censor yourself and read, read, read! By reading you will see how characters develop a voice and a presence. Discover favorite writers and try to see what it is you like about their writing. Be a child in the world--full of wonder and open to anything.

A novel. The first story in this collection (Visible Wounds) is the beginning of a novel that I am writing. I'm about two thirds done with the first draft. I continue to write short stories--a new one is circulating to contests. I also write an occasional poem.

I've been a writer as long as I can remember. It's about having a daily discipline. Most of my writing is practice. Occasionally it becomes more. Writing is also a necessary way of being in the world for me. I love that it is portable, doesn't care what I wear, and isn't fussy about my messy desk or fluctuating schedule. I have certain objects in my writing room--a bird whistle, a silver acorn given to me by a writing friend, a bear claw (real one) for courage, a penny whistle--and quotes--lots of quotes.

I've always been interested in how people cope with loss, trauma, or change. Growing a New Tail is a collection of short stories where characters must, in a sense, reinvent themselves. I'm also drawn to quirky characters who are not what they initially seem to be. I'm of the opinion that everyone has a hidden side and that is most interesting to me as a writer. I like surprises in life and in fiction. I much prefer the good ones in the former--with the latter, anything can happen.
