Patty Apostolides Given that I tend to write love stories, and this question is about mysteries and plots, I am not sure I can answer that. Besides, I don't really have any mysteries in my life that could be used for a plot.

I usually get my plot when I focus on the question "What motivates a person?" That motivation, whether it's to get an education, a job, or to get married, could be the impetus for a plot. They need to go from A to B, and what do they do to get there?
Patty Apostolides This summer, I've been reading a lot of nonfiction books for my PhD classes and here are two of my favorite - John Maxwell's "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership," and Merriam's "Learning in Adulthood."
Patty Apostolides I've always liked writing. When I was young, it began when I had my twelfth birthday and received a journal. I began writing in it and haven't stopped writing since then.
Patty Apostolides I am currently editing/revising an 87 year old man's memoir. It is a fascinating story.
Patty Apostolides Aspiring writers, take heed. There's a lot to learn about being an author, like the process of writing stories, and editing and revising. However, the one most important piece of advice is to persevere. Keep writing and don't stop. The more you write, the better you get at writing.
Patty Apostolides I love being a writer, because I enjoy writing. The best thing about being a writer is the feedback from my readers and knowing that I am sharing a part of my life with them.
Patty Apostolides I put it aside and work on something else until the inspiration returns. Writer's block means that I'm dealing with a complex situation in my story and I need time to think about it.
